Yes, I have all the Delphi Classics omnibus editions, and many of those are monstrously long. I certainly wouldn't count those as single books, though.

I absolutely loved all three of the films, but I do regard them as a creative work that stands separate from the books. I really do think "Sir Peter" did an outstanding job (which thoroughly merited his knighthood!).

While I praise Eru Ilúvatar that the benighted Jackson, while he was able to buy legislation here, still can't get his grubby little hands on my favourite Tolkien work, The Silmarillion

I read War and Peace at a time of drought, when I was a poor student, ebooks didn't exist, and I would pick my £1 Wordsworth Classics by volume. I liked it a great deal, although I did skim the Historical Imperative essays at the start of each section.

It's the remnants of the drought mentality that bring me to this thread, I think.

Being ill at home does wonders for the number of books I read. Seven bought this month, but nine finished so far this month.

Along with my discarded freebies, I think I'm going to end up with a (tiny) reduction in my TBR this year!

So my target for next year is to reduce my TBR by buying fewer books than I read. Just fiddling the numbers isn't good enough.

(This year's totals so far are 135 books read, but 191 books bought.)

Back to work tomorrow. So I may finish another five or six books this month.

Thumbs up Free Books with Survey

I have found the perfect solution for adding extra books to my 2,500 collection.

Download the Google Opinion Rewards App.

You get short surveys to answer which only take seconds

You are rewarded by Google Play Credit which soon adds up.
I have gained 30 books so far this year for free

Their prices are in line with Amazons

Perhaps more appropriate to the Deals and Resources thread?

I don't think that anyone in this thread has a problem with the amount they're spending on ebooks. Just with the quantity.

I did much better with the Audible 50% off sale this year. All planned on wishlist and completing 2 series. Only 2 unplanned purchases of ebooks (one being $2.99 LOTR Omnibus which I simply could not let pass).

To meet my goal of having a smaller TBR at the end of next year, I'm cancelling my Audible account for a year. Still dithering on Asimov (what if there is an outstanding issue?) despite being behind on reading older issues. No Baen Bundles. Yep, it's a goal.

Just heard Smashwords is going to have an end of year sale from 26th December. Loads of books will be very cheap or free! We're doomed.

I can't imagine wanting anything Smashwords sells, so it won't affect me.

However, and this applies to several recent posts, it would be much better not to give people who are making a honest effort to cut down on purchases advance notice of sales, links to cheap books, or strategies for acquiring books. As Paul said only three posts above, such posts are better suited to the Deals forum. This thread should be more of a "safe" space for people trying to avoid temptation.

I am working on cleaning our family LibraryThing account (I track all the physical books my wife and I have there) and my Calibre for my digital books. That is more than enough to keep me away from sales.

I think my reading goal for 2018 was 13 books. I blew that out of the water and read around 35-40. i found having a crazy amount of books motivates me to read more

I now have unread books acquired over the past eleven years (bought or free)

2018: 100
2017: 57
2016: 140
2015: 183
2014: 120
2013: 103
2012: 43
2011: 42
2010: 74
2009: 56
2008: 95

No obvious pattern. But perhaps I've been doing a little better in 2017 and 2018 than in earlier years.

I'm certainly going to try to keep acquired but unread books to a minimum in 2019.

You are doing better and keep in mind that your listing doesn't incldue the pre-2008 ebooks that you were trying to finish previously. So PROGRESS!
