After wading through Police at the Funeral it's time for a short break from Allingham, to begin another "back to my teens" series re-read, starting with Crocodile on the Sandbank. MUCH more fun, thankfully.

I've recently finished "A Wanted Man", by Lee Child, which is the 17th book in the "Jack Reacher" series. An enjoyable romp, as always. Recommended.
Now reaching Jack Williamson's "The Weapon", bought from Baen in 2005. |

Lies Sleeping was fun, not my favorite in the series but good.
Next up I will try to finish Alcatraz and the Evil Librarians, I started this a month ago on a trip and then wanted to wait for the ebook from my library. Should be another fast read. With any luck I will finish it tomorrow so that it won't be on my "in progress" list for 3 different months. After that is The Fated Sky by Mary Robinette Kowal, the second of her Lady Astronaut series. I really enjoyed the first so am looking forward to this one. It's weird to me that 4 of the last 5 books I have read are new releases (plus The Fated Sky). I don't normally get them this grouped together. |

Finished Wildcard by Marie Lu. Wasn't sure where it was going until, near the middle point the epiphany comes, and then I was locked in until the finale. Overall a good sequel to Warcross.

I just finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. It had been nominated for the book club some time back and I thought it sounded interesting, and now I wish it had been selected for discussion because I'm not quite sure what to make of it. I didn't seem to be enjoying myself very much, but the (relatively short) book vanished in just three sittings so it must have done something right. It has a lot of funny lines, but is quite a serious book, discussing racism, alcoholism among Native Americans, and definition of self (amongst other things). But it's all quite blunt, coarse even. Not much subtlety and little elegance except, arguably, in the included sketches by Ellen Forney (incidentally, these worked remarkably well in ebook/e-ink display). I ended up giving it a 3/5 mostly because I can't see myself ever picking it up to re-read it (which is what it takes to get a 4/5 from me).

Just Starting David Gilmour's The British in India While NOT proud of the Raj, at all, I am proud of my Anglo-Indian heritage, and look forward to learning about the land of my fathers from this book.

Still reading Frankenstien in Baghdad and listening to the absolutely fantastic Prairie Fires: The American Dreams of Laura Ingalls Wilder which won the Pulitzer for biography last year. My library had the audiobook on CD and I was happy to snag it.
Amusingly, I have read any of the Little House series. The book is standing completely on its own as a great historical biography. |

I am currently reading Murakami's latest novel "Killing Commendatore." So far so good for me. I have never not liked any of his works, and I only say this because this book, too, hasn't seen many admirers. As always, there is much to appreciate here: meditations on music, cooking, and writing. Anybody else read this book? Any thoughts?
I have also been reading a lot of non-fiction this year, and I'm happy with whatever I've read so far. Right now I'm reading "Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life" (4th Edition). Thankfully, the non-fiction I've read this year has enabled me to understand literary fiction better. |

Just finished "The Weapon", by Jack Williamson, bought from Baen in 2005. This is set in the same universe as the earlier novel, "Freehold", but it's not really a sequel and can be read perfectly well as a standalone. Military SF about a "black-ops" soldier's career. Enjoyable, although I found the not terribly subtle politics a little annoying at times (although not nearly to the same extent that John Ringo pushes his political agenda).

Just finished reading Stone Mad by Elizabeth Bear. A sequel to Karen Memory, it was not nearly as satisfying.
Not going to hit my goal for the year of 150 reads, for certain. But I keep on truckin'. |
