I got the Roku Ultra and the Ring 2 doorbell with the free dot3.

Course I also ordered some other stuff not really related to black friday from Amazon as I am moving and needed, um, things.

That's right, I did it. With free shipping this holiday season, Hulu for a year, and a paid Spotify account, I see no benefit in paying Amazon $120 a year for services I can get elsewhere.

While I sympathize with you, issybird, at least you CAN get home delivery. I don't have to worry about stuff out in the rain, since the ONLY option that gets home delivery here is FedEx or courier -- and in both cases, it's the same driver.

UPS and Parcel Post both go to the Post Office. (I know, inconceivable in the US, but the rules are different here.) And we have no home delivery, not even a rural mailbox. Our mailbox is at the post office so all packages require us to go in and pick them up. Even Amazon "pickup" packages end up there. Good news is, they stay dry. Bad news is, I get wet picking them up! Ah, well. Gives me a chance to hear the latest local news.

No argument there and added to that are zero worries about packages dumped in the driveway. Theft is not an issue. However, it would be in everyone's best interest if minimal precautions in regard to inclement weather were taken, i.e., sticking cartons in large plastic bags when it's pouring! Especially since they do do it some of the time, so it's not a novel concept. If I hadn't found my packages until this morning, they would have been ruined and required replacement.

What's Amazon's current total that's required to get free shipping (if you give up Prime)? I do shop with them for some day-to-day items that are hard to find in a store. It's so much easier to type in the name of the item, than to tramp all around a large store, and still not find it. For some items.

I think Amazon has drawn me in completely at this point, though I might extricate myself in the event of a Prime price increase when renewal rolls around.

Ditto. It went from $99 to $119 earlier this year. Has your price already jumped? It jumped whenever your renewal was due. If it goes up again, I might balk.

I'm finding that we use Prime more and more. It's now our gateway into all sorts of "channels" of video that we _could_ do independently, but that we instead choose to use Prime Video and our Fire TV Cube for. Plus when I _do_ order stuff from AmazonUS, I especially want the assurance of 2 day shipping.

My 3rd generation Echo Dots arrived today. My impressions (vs. the 2nd generation models of which I have several):

For voice interaction with Alexa only, stick with the 2nd generation - it's a clearer and more distinct voice, and you will save yourself a few dollars. For music playback, definitely buy the 3rd generation - it's nowhere near a good sound system, but a big step up from the 2nd generation model (for music playback, that is).

The third generation is significantly larger and heavier. Supposedly it is more stylish, but I actually prefer the hockey puck look of the 2nd generation. That's probably because my wife and my son both play hockey and we already have 50 bazillion hockey pucks sitting around the house, so the older model Echo Dots fit right in.

The 2nd generation used a standard micro USB connector. Since you probably have 25 million of those cords/adapters sitting around, you'd never have an issue powering the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation Dots use a tubular connector that is permanently attached to the wall adapter. I imagine that Amazon's intent with this change is to force/guide you towards buying a replacement cord from Amazon if you break the original, instead of grabbing one of those 25 million spare micro usb cords you already have laying around.

Bottom line: If you are unlucky enough, or non-audiophile enough, to have to listen to your music through a Dot's little speaker, 100% for sure get the 3rd generation. However, if you don't listen to music, or listen by connecting your Dot to a real sound system via bluetooth or cable, then I would recommend sticking with the 2nd generation.

I'm glad I tried the 3rd generation model while it was on sale for only $4 more than the 2nd generation ... but I don't think I would buy the 3rd generation over the 2nd again. We'll see as time goes on. I haven't tested the intercom yet, and possibly the 3rd generation will excel at that and I'll change my mind. My biggest gripe about the 3rd generation is that, compared to the 2nd generation, Alexa sounds like shes talking to you through a megaphone (not because of volume, but because of the echo/boomy and bass heavy sound you get through a megaphone).
