If this was the "Guilt by Association" thread, then I'd be posting something like Salt and Wound....

ikea in france will deliver *some* things (larger furniture) but not *all* things (anything you can carry, you better carry it), and they charge a pretty exorbitant fee which is based not on size, weight, or distance of the delivery but on the total price of the items being delivered, and after the first level the delivery cost actually triples, if memory serves, so you better be reeeeeally careful to do your maths properly before getting to the checkout !

Sorry, I wasn't sure if delivery was a US-only thing.

oh, and i forgot to mention, that for most of the delivery services, you do actually have to make the epic journey out to the ikea warehouse in person to locate, retrieve, and cart through checkout yourself your unweildy packets, and then take them to the delivery center yourself.

Ikea do some home delivery in the UK - either from the store (it's cheaper than hiring a van, but more expensive than using a dodgy taxi company...) or from their website.The last time I thought about that they told me I'd have to wait 7 weeks for something that was in stock...

Their stock checking is laughable online or in the store. As are some of their stock storage policies - we wanted to buy a table they had in stock, but were informed we'd have to come back in two days as they could only get it when the store was closed!

arg !!! that happened to me too !!! except they told me i could come back "tomorrow".

since going to ikea (particularly if you don't have a car) is an all day epic journey, that was completely out of the question. and what i wanted was one of the items you can't order online, and they won't deliver it. bastards !!!

I like ikea. But I haven't had as bad of an experience as y'all, and I suspect that is because the experiences we've had reflect our respective national cultures.

We're used to big box retailers in the US, and most people have a car. I guess ikea just fits in US culture better than Europe. I wish I'd had an ikea store nearby when I got my first apartment. I'd have furnished the entire apartment there.

yes, sorry, sometimes i have a foul mouth, and i forget myself.

when speaking of my last experience with ikea this is common. console yourself knowing it could have been much, much worse.

nate, you are right : if i had a car, my experience would have been VASTLY different. and i do actually like ikea's products (most of them, anyway). i just wish it wasn't nearly impossible for me to get any of them.
