Specific reason for no color temp adjustment on any Kindles?

PDFs are really intended to interchange paper printouts, and proof paper on screen. Ghastly format to actually use for reading, especially if a scanned source BECAUSE deliberately it's not meant to reflow or resize!
There are eInk devices for PDFs that can do magazine, letter size or A4. Unfortunately they are expensive, and some of the good ones don't do eBooks.

The big issue is the software. It's poor on EVERY eReader and app I've tried. It's like they only test with a few dozen books. Also like they have not researched libraries or document management. They've concentrated on stupid stuff (advert and & social media sharing). Navigation and Collection organisation has hardly progressed since before Kindle existed.
The original Kindle was CRAZY. Worse font & language support than every OS at the time.
Desperately poor support for annotating and getting annotations off to PC (Kobo H2O better than Kindle and the PRS350 ghastly).
I've written document management systems and software to manage physical libraries. The current state of eReaders book management, navigation, annotations, fonts, layout is poorer than late 1980s specialist DOS SW and poorer than Mac, Windows and Linux in 1998!

That's a good point. Personally, I'd prefer mp3's than Audible files. I used to listen to music, while reading, on my Sony readers. I almost forgot about it, since getting a Kindle.

The point is to convert the UV to visible light with the phosphor. Decent CFL and LED do not actually radiate UV.

Not in this case. Try the LEDs yourself, I'm part of a flashlight forum (budgetlightforum) and they are picker than you. http://budgetlightforum.com/node/61130 Optisolis are probably too expensive to put in here though, you'll end up with cheap 5000k and 3000k lights.

Obviously daylight fades artwork. Decent LED, CFL, Florescent and halogen lamps for art display have UV filters.

I think the point is to give light that never has UV but is as close as possible to perfect black body radiation.

The colour rendition problem is worst with the COB and similar LEDs (the one to nine high power types) and highest efficiency CFLs as well as higher efficiency LEDs.

I do think the idea of mixed colour LEDs so as to be able to have a less blue front light (as per some Kobos) is a good one as the evidence suggests the excess blue (WORSE in LEDs with LESS UV) is bad for sleep and degrades the retina.
So I don't use the fixed "white" front lights on my PW3 or Kobo H2O if there is any alternative. I have good enough lights to read old books, so never need front light on at home.

Why did you get the paperwhite if not for the light? Did you think you'd use it more than you would? I thought the same thing about x-ray and I keep the light on all the time at around level 3.

I can't say I disagree with you. I just see those types of books being advertised the most and I assume they're sold the most and read the most. The software is definitely lacking severely, but is it really that bad? I've found all the eBook software lacking in some way (calibre is slow and weak, the sony ones were no better than kindle now, and kindles read pdfs poorly, and x-ray was a marketing ploy rather than good annotations). Its not bad for reading though, and the search isn't great, and the display for the books is bad, but I don't think this was intended to be a personal library as much as a 'buy shit from amazon's vertical monopoly' system. The poor pdf support and poor management is by design and completely intentional.

I too was surprised they didn't add color temperature adjustment but from a business standpoint it makes sense. Adding it to the Paperwhite would have upstaged their flagship reader, the Oasis, hurting sales. Especially now that the gap between the Oasis and Paperwhite has closed with waterproofing, bluetooth, and a flush screen.

Moreover there's no incentive for Amazon to give away everything at once. E-reader technology moves at a glacial pace and they are saving this feature for next time. You have luxury of doing that when you're a monopoly. Enough people are satisfied with the update to the Paperwhite. I predict they'll add color temperature controls to the Oasis first and then to the next generation Paperwhite.

Instead of waterproofing or audible, I would have liked to see text-to-speech with fairly realistic voices (like one I have on my computer, a UK voice called Audrey, which I had to buy and install into Balabolka.) Maybe even the option of adding Librivox for immersive reading (not underwater!)

My Sony prs 505 has an amazing library management system I would love to see on a kindle. It's been a long time since I've used it, but I seem to remember that this was done using the Sony Ebook Software on the computer. The reader was linked to the computer via usb, collections could be created (I have things like Historical, Humour, Romance, Juvenile, Sci Fi/Fantasy etc) then the books 'slipped' into the collections using the software. There was absolutely no need to use wifi.

I can't put collections on the kindle, apparently this is something that happens in the cloud.

I returned a Kobo Clara yesterday (friday). I bought this because of the light temperature adjustment, but the light bleed was terrible: it had strips of light down both sides and bright patches in each of the bottom corners.

I was thinking of buying a PW4, but the early reviews have put me off. I'm going to wait until readers make a bigger improvement. Waterproofing? Flush bezels? Not really much of an upgrade.

Now if someone remade the Sony prs 505 with frontlight and temperature control which gave even light, I'd snap it up.

No. You can make collections on a Kindle locally, while the Kindle is in airplane mode. But the Kindle must be registered, i.e. it has to connect to a wifi network at least once. In your case I would go somewhere with public wifi and register my Kindle. Or at a friend's/relative's place. Then it can be in airplane mode for the rest of its life, but you can still make collections on it.

Thank you. I wasn't aware of this. I had my kindle account registered at Amazon by phone, but the device has never been on wifi - I don't have wifi. I might go to a friend's and try to register the device. I was under the mistaken impression that I had to be online via wifi in order to use Collections.

Yup, they also started a new series of Amazon Classics that was free for a while and is now 3 bucks each or KU subscription. I picked up a few when they were free but will likely never complete my collection now.

No, but Nausicaa is right. The 6 and 7 inch screens are just too small to have enough words on one page for stuff that cannot simply be gulped down.
I‘ve tried reading more technical philosophy and more complicated non fiction as well as some more difficult novels for years, and it simply does not work for me, the text is just too fragmented...
(I‘ve switched to an iPad Pro 10 for that and it has just the right size, plus PDFs have the added benefit of fixed layouts which generally helps me memorize stuff by picturing the page layout)

That may be true for you and a significant number of others, but as long as there are not a lot of complicated figures, mathematical formulas, or computer program source code, I can and do read non-fiction just fine on a 6" screen and I am not alone.
