As mentioned in an earlier post, I had forgotten I could do that -- but I like it. In Grid View (on my Kindle Basic, 8th Gen) I have six covers in two rows, in List View I get seven titles (I have the special offer "feature" so in both views I get a small strip ad at the bottom promoting a book).

Is it booklet KUAL? If not, install it.

Is it the latest hotfix?

5.10.1.1 disappeared from Amazon Update web page, the last is 5.9.7.

Must have been more than a few bugs. Now I feel like a "beta tester." I'm guessing there is no path back for those of us who have 5.10.1.1? (Not that I'm looking for one, since my 8th Generation Kindle Basic seems to be fine with it.)

And paperwhite 10th appears and disappears in software updates section couple of times already, i think that''s something wrong with 5.10.x firmware.

At least on my kindle manga (Japan-only PW3 with 32 GB of storage that I imported via ebay) with about 7 GB of stuff on it, text files won't open, it freezes for a bit, then portions of the home screen disappear, then it pops up an error message telling me it can't be opened and to delete it from my device and redownload if it's in kindle cloud. Using calibre to convert to mobi and email to kindle cloud works though.

I must have missed something. Is there a new update within the last few weeks for the PW3, or is the older update that came out a bit ago with the extended homescreen?

I actually read in the house on my Kobo H20 original and outdoors on the Sony PRS350 or my phone (Aldiko Reader). I have a Kindle so as to buy eBooks from Amazon and see what my own titles look like on a Kindle. I did get the DXG so as to manage A4 PDFs, but it's not good enough, the Kobo H2O manages better and is also no use for old magazines scanned to PDF. I'll probably give the DXG to someone with failing eyesight. I've deregistered it.

I actually just chatted with amazon regarding the text file issue, seems to only be on txt files emailed to kindle cloud (but not mobi files). That's weird

Don't feel bad, you are probably not a beta tester. I just chatted with CS and asked if I needed to worry about possible future problems with my Oasises (or whatever the plural of Oasis is) being on 5.10.1.1. since the update is no longer there to download. The CSR told me that I had nothing to worry about. Also that 5.10.1.1 is only an OTA update, not downloadable. I insisted that I manually upgraded, still have the file on my computer. Then the CSR let slip (intentionally or on purpose I am not sure) that ALL devices that are already at least on 5.9.7 have no problems with the 5.10.1.1 update.

From all this I gather that:

• The 5.10.1.1 update is safe for every Kindle that has 5.9.7 or newer at the time of update
• Kindles that update to 5.10.1.1 and are currently lower than 5.9.7 may have potential issues - DO NOT UPDATE TO 5.10.1.1 if you are not on 5.9.7 or newer
• The download link to manually update is removed to not destroy any more old Kindles that are not yet on 5.9.7
• OTA updates to 5.10.1.1 probably check that the device is on 5.9.7 before scheduling
• To get 5.10.1.1 the workaround appears to be to manually update to 5.9.7 and then wait for the OTA to 5.10.1.1 (or install the file manually if you have access to the previously downloadable file)

We seen the reports. It is not, as I initially thought, a problem of an automatic update, but a general problem with the update.

Good to know, thank you. None of my Kindles are on 5.9.7 yet (they're in airplane mode for most of the time and I don't install every update, only those I'm interested in).

I guess that's why I didn't have any issues. I was already at 5.9.7 when I upgraded (manually) to 5.10.1.1. If anyone wants the 5.10.1.1 firmware for the Basic (8th Gen) I have that. Apparently Softpedia has all the 5.10.1.1 releases at their website. Don't know if I would trust them or not.

Oh, and the plural of Oasis is Oases — which doesn't look right.

EDIT: It looks like the software is still on Amazon's servers, just not linked. For example, the Oasis 2nd Edition firmware is at:

You just have to change "kindle_all_new_oasis_" to your model ...

Examples: "_kindle_8th_" ; "_kindle_oasis_" ; "_kindle_voyage_" ; "_kindle_" ; "_kindle_all_new_paperwhite_" ; "_kindle_paperwhite_v2_" (The one that just says "kindle" is the Kindle Basic, 7th Gen.)
