Consider who you’re replying to. I don’t think I’ve seen a positive comment on a Kobo from them since the first H2O. I wouldn’t hold my breath for a fair and balanced assessment from them. Though they are of course entitled to their view.

Reading these boards, I did have the feeling that almost all Claras had the light bleed issue. In fact, I started a thread to ask if any users had received a reader that didn't have the issue. Several people had. Though, to be fair, if you consider how small the pool of people on this board is, the amount of users who bought one with the issue is pretty bad. Especially considering it should be an easy fix for Kobo. I'll let Kobo slide on the blotchy Aura One and the Forma. Those are both relative novelties. New technology or form factor. The Clara just isn't built well. |

For what it’s worth I don’t have any issues with my Forma. If there’s an unevenness or light bar etc it’s not gotten in my way. The only thing I’ve noticed is that there’s the typical slight shadow around the edges but even with minuscule margins that’s not affected the text. And it’s been an issue on every frontlit eink device I’ve seen. And I’ve probably seen hundreds of them thanks to an old job.

I'm not saying I don't understand, or that people shouldn't complain or be angry, of course: I asked for a refund back when I bought the first Aura because I couldn't not see the lines in the capacitive layer. My Glo HD also has a couple of small bright dots... that I never notice, and I'm still using it everyday. Devices of all kinds can come with small manufacturing defects, but it's up to us to decide whether we care or not. We should always decide for ourselves. |

I think the reason peeps on MR are maybe more sensitive to issues with ereaders is that we tend to have other ereaders for comparison. For example, I tried reading on the Clara this afternoon in order to convince myself that there isn't really a problem, it's just me. But the lighting down the sides and in the bottom corners started to annoy me so much that I switched to the same book on my Paperwhite. Such a relief! I was reading a free Smashwords book, Nano for the New and Insane, which I'd downloaded in both mobi and epub.
Yes, I remember hearing of all the complaints about the first Paperwhite; I was still happily using my old Sony prs 505 back then. Maybe in the future, ereaders with blue light reduction will be more successful, just as frontlit readers are now. What really puzzles me: why don't they do the tape fix at the factory? It appears to solve the issue for those brave enough to try it; likewise the marker fix. |

Before I return the Clara, should I do anything to it, like a factory reset? If so, how is this done?

John Lewis took it back for a refund without question. I'll just hang on to my PW2 until there's a reader with really reliable blue light reduction.
Thanks for all the help. |

Have you looked at the H2O2 at all? I have heard very little complaint about its lighting. I'm certainly very happy with mine.

Meeera, thanks for this. Even though I'm not remotely troubled by the "light bleed" issue when I do fiddle with my Clara specifically to see it, it's nice to know the H2O2 doesn't have it, as I'm seriously contemplating buying one for the slightly bigger screen. Fewer page turns at a price much more affordable than a Forma is the main draw, hearing good things about its lighting a nice bonus.
