Some cheap and free horror from author Sara Clancy at Amazon. I haven't read any of her work yet, but think I'm going to start Black Eyed Children today.

Black Eyed Children is $0.99. It may always be this price for all I know. But the synopsis sounds promising to me.

Quote:
With three knocks, Ruby is cast into a living hell…

It had seemed like the perfect job. For months, she could stay in a cabin in the middle of the Yukon wilderness with only a pack of sledge dogs to care for. But from the moment she arrives in the isolated dog yard, something is terribly wrong. She can feel it watching her from the woods. She can hear them whispering to her in the silence. But she is sure it is just a trick of her mind.

Until the night they arrive.

Three children appear on her doorstep in the middle of the night; each one with pitch black eyes. They plead with her to let them inside, but her rejection draws her into a war of wills against the demonic forces. Isolated in a terrain she doesn’t understand, and trapped by an oncoming blizzard, Ruby will have to decide how far she’s willing to go to survive.

She’ll soon learn that it’s hard to keep the devil out when you’ve already opened the door.
Midnight Screams is FREE.

Quote:
When Benton dreams, people die…

Every time Benton sleeps, he becomes a trapped passenger within a murderer’s skin; able to hear, see, and feel every part of their kill. When he wakes up, he knows it’s only a matter of time before his dreams become reality. No matter how hard he tries to stop the murders, it always ends the same way – with death.

After ten years of constantly relocating, his parents have decided to settle in Fort Wayward. A quiet Albertan town where Benton could focus on graduating high school and living an idyllic teenage life. That is, until he finds a dead body in his backyard.

Benton’s hopes for normalcy come crashing down as something new begins stalking his dreams. Something that’s not human. And, for the first time, he’s not the only one watching.

As his dreams and reality collide, Benton finds himself facing a monster beyond his understanding. In his fight for survival, Benton soon discovers why death follows him, why monsters draw close, and why he always wakes up screaming.
Black Bayou is FREE.

Quote:
Marigold La Roux had a perfectly average existence…until the night her parents tried to murder her.

Barely escaping with her life should have been the end of Marigold’s living nightmare. Unfortunately, it was just the beginning. Her entire world starts shattering. She moves to New Orleans to stay with her only living relative, her aunt Delilah. She believes the bustle of Bourbon Street will help her get a fresh start, but strange things start happening to Marigold at the La Roux estate. Ghostly voices whisper in her ear, sharp knives scrape against her door, and something in the darkness lashes out, leaving deep claw marks on her back.

Hoping to understand her torment, she starts delving into her family’s past and is shocked and appalled by what she discovers. She begins to understand why locals shudder at the mere mention of La Roux house. The attacks against her grow more vicious, ravaging not only her body, but also her mind.

Desperate to end her suffering, Marigold teams up with Louis, an occult enthusiast, who hopes his knowledge of the paranormal can help end her family curse once and for all. But, the dark forces of evil are relentless and their twisted hold runs deep in her blood. They will stop at nothing to get what they want: her life.

Grady Hendrix' Horrorstor is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon. It normally goes for $9.99. Imagine a haunted Ikea...

Quote:
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring bookshelves, shattered Glans water goblets, and smashed Liripip wardrobes. Sales are down, security cameras reveal nothing, and store managers are panicking.

To unravel the mystery, three employees volunteer to work a nine-hour dusk-till-dawn shift. In the dead of the night, they’ll patrol the empty showroom floor, investigate strange sights and sounds, and encounter horrors that defy the imagination.
The paper book is made to look like an Ikea catalog. Some of that will be lost in the e-book. But the book gets good reviews for more than its packaging gimmick.

Exactly. I looked at the paper book last time I was at B&N. It's not really an illustrated book, but each chapter starts with a fake advertisement for one of the items for sale, with names like MESONXIC (a bookshelf), BROOKA (a sofa) and KRAANJK (a meat grinder). The items get stranger as the book continues.

I bought the e-book today, but won't be able to check it out until I get home. I hope it's formatted well for e-ink.

He has a second book (not on sale) called My Best Friend's Exorcism. The cover of that book is made to look like a VHS tape.

Sounds like fun. And Kobo seem to have it at the same price.

Clive Barker's The Hellbound Heart, basis for the first Hellraiser movie (aka 'the good one') is on sale for $1.99 at Amazon.

Quote:
Frank Cotton's insatiable appetite for the dark pleasures of pain led him to the puzzle of Lemarchand's box, and from there, to a death only a sick-minded soul could invent. But his brother's love-crazed wife, Julia, has discovered a way to bring Frank back—though the price will be bloody and terrible . . . and there will certainly be hell to pay.

I read Sara Clancy's Black-Eyed Children (the same author that wrote Black Bayou, that you picked up). She is excellent with suspense. But there was no characterization and not much scene setting. I rated it as three stars out of five. Two and a half would be more honest.

It was a quick, fun read. but I was irritated that it wasn't better.

I'll try another of her books. They were free.

Mike Carey's The Girl With All the Gifts is $2.99 at Amazon.

Quote:
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius."

Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh.
It was also turned into a movie, which is available free on Amazon Prime.

As the screenplay was written by the author, it's a fairly good adaptation of the book. Although there was some condensing and several things were left out, I was very happy with it overall.

I think this will be a case where I watch the movie before I read the book, since I'm not sure how long the movie will be on Prime and who knows when I will get to reading the book?

Two 'weird west' books by scriptwriter Eric Red are on sale at Amazon:

The Guns of Santa Sangre is $3.11:

Quote:
Six-guns vs. werewolves in the Old West!

They’re hired guns. The best at what they do. They’ve left bodies in their wake across the West. But this job is different. It’ll take all their skill and courage. And very special bullets. Because their targets this time won’t be shooting back. They’ll fight back with ripping claws, tearing fangs and animal cunning. They’re werewolves. A pack of bloodthirsty wolfmen have taken over a small Mexican village, and the gunmen are the villagers’ last hope. The light of the full moon will reveal the deadliest showdown the West has ever seen—three men with six-shooters facing off against snarling, inhuman monsters.
Fun or just too silly? You decide (I bought the book, but haven't read it yet).

There's a sequel that's also on sale:

The Wolves of El Diablo is $3.90.
