About kobo customer service, in 2013 i bought Kobo aura HD, and after 2 years of use i saw my dog carrying it in his teeth and that broke a screen. my kobo was dead.as i live in non eu country i contacted kobo in germany about the screen "issue" not telling them a real cuse.
Although that happened 2 months over a warranty period, they replaced my kobo with a new one (still working). I'm very happy with kobo CS. i had to pay dhl costs only for returning the device, and got one back with no costs. Last edited by forster01; 10-26-2018 at 12:36 PM. |

Thanks so much. I'm overwhelmed with all the help and can't wait to buy my new Clara.
I'll copy and paste this advice into a Word document so that it can easily be refered to when necessary. ![]() |

I went to John Lewis today but they didn't have any Kobo Clara's on display, nor did they have any in stock. The salesperson we spoke to (I went with a friend) said that they only had Kindles on display. I mentioned that they have them on their online shop. He suggested that I order it from there and if I don't like it, I can send it back. So I enquired about whether I'd have to pay the postage costs of sending it back. He suggested I could return it to the shop instead of sending it to the online store, which sounds a bit odd to me.
We also looked in WH Smith. They had some Kobo's on display, but not the Clara. However, they were all "dead". When I eventually found an assistant she had no idea how to use them and couldn't get past the "log into your wifi" demand. I asked her if there were any books loaded onto the reader, but she didn't know, saying that if I asked her about paperbacks she'd know what she was talking about. So we left, none the wiser. I'll probably just order one from John Lewis online, at least the guy at the shop had some idea about ereaders, even though they didn't stock the model. I just hope he was correct regarding the ability to return an online purchase to the real life shop. Oh well, you never know, it might just be perfect and have a great screen with no unacceptable light issues. Thought I would let you know how things went. |

The odds of this may be better than you think. Online stock probably moves faster than from disinterested retail outlets, and newer Claras do seem to be more likely to be free of the issue, judging by feedback here

@BookCat Just fyi, it's not that odd to be able to return in store an item bought online from the same store. Unless they have it explicitly written in their return policy that you can't, it tends to be the norm, from what I've seen. I personally like that, especially when there's a local store, no hassle with packing it up, no worrying about who is paying to post it back, etc.

I've ordered it from John Lewis online. Next stop, Amazon, to buy a nice case for it. Thanks for the reassurance.

Bit late now, but when ordering from John Lewis online, so can also arrange to have the item sent to any John Lewis or Waitrose shop and collect it from there, if that is more convenient that having it posted to you.

Thanks, but it's easier if they send it to me.

The reader arrived this afternoon. I waited till writing my nano quota before opening the box. That was done about an hour ago. I've spent the hour trying to sign in to the Kobo site.
Going back a bit. After switching on the reader, it wanted me to set up the thing. I was glad to see that it gave the option to do this without wifi and told me to link it to my computer via usb, which I did, then download Kobo Desktop, which I did. Then the trouble started! Trying to set up an account with Kobo was almost impossible. I gave them my email and selected a password. But they wouldn't accept them, for some unknown reason, so I tried using my facebook account. They wanted the password for this. It's been so long since I've needed to use that that I hadn't a clue what it was, so had to set up a new facebook password! Now that I've successfully created a Kobo account, bought a free book and one for a few pence (to try it out), I'm being told by Kobo Desktop that: Wait! You must set up your eReader before syncing. Your ereader must be set up with an account before completing the sync. Please set up your ereader with the account (email address) if you would like to sync it with the current library on Kobo Desktop. I thought that was what I just spent an hour doing! The ereader's screen is black and is still telling me to download the Kobo Desktop, which I've done. Seems like this has to be done using wifi, unfortunately, the friend who said I could use his wifi is out tonight. Botherations!!! |

No, you spent an hour registering a Kobo account with Kobo. Now you have to tell your ereader what your account with Kobo is, so it knows who’s account it needs to sync with. There should be an option to do that from Kobo Desktop, but I can’t help you as I’ve never done it through the Desktop application. |
