I've wanted to try something by Tonino Benacquista for a while, mostly because I like reading mysteries set in France. So, although this one looks as if it may be set more in Naples, I'm happy to see Holy Smoke (per SYKM, the fourth in the Antoine Andrieux series) on sale for $2.10, when it's normally in the $8 and up range.

Quote:
“Boisterous black comedy . . . funny and goodhearted, with much incident and expert enthusiasm for sex, food and drink.”—The Literary Review

“Much to enjoy in the clash of cultures and superstitions, even a tasty recipe for poisoning your friends with pasta. Detail like this places European crime writing on a par with its American counterpart.”—Belfast Independent

Some favors simply cannot be refused. Tonio agrees to write a love letter for Dario, a low-rent Paris gigolo. When Dario is murdered, a single bullet to the head, Tonio finds he has been left a small vineyard near Naples. The wine is undrinkable, but an elaborate scam has been set up. The smell of easy money attracts the unwanted attentions of the Mafia and the Vatican and the unbridled hatred of the locals. Mafiosi aren’t choir boys, and monsignors can be very much like Mafiosi.

Winner of three mystery prizes in one year, including the Grand Prix de la Littérature Policière and the Prix Mystère de la Critique.

Tonino Benacquista, born in France of Italian immigrants, dropped out of film studies to finance his writing career. After being in turn a museum watchman, a train guard on the Paris-Rome line and a professional parasite on the Paris cocktail circuit, he is now a highly successful author of fiction and film scripts.

Excellent books. The series went seriously downhill (IMHO) later on, but the first 10 or so books are very good indeed.

You thought it went downhill? I love the whole series on one hand and on the other I wonder how far off Cornwell is in writing how a pathologists actually works. Maybe I allowed more leeway since I listened to the series instead of reading them.

Another Falconer title has dropped, this time the fifth one, Falconer and the Great Beast, although only to $3.34, which is at the upper edge of what I consider a good sale on very old back list. Not sure if I'll bite or hope for a better price - I do have a scanned pdf that I made from my DTB. Decisions, decisions, decisions......

In any case, if you want to buy, here's the info:

Spoiler:
Quote:
It is 1268, and Oxford is forced to play host to the Tartars, a tribe from the East whose fierceness is legendary, and who, after having played havoc in France and Germany now cross the English Channel under the banner of Peace. Their arrival, little welcome by the people of Oxford, creates a sense of foreboding and when the Tartar ambassador is found dead it looks like murder, or magic?

Master William Falconer, the committed scientist knows, or thinks he knows, a rational explanation must lay behind the emissary’s death but before the mystery is solved he has to question the soundness of his methods.

E-books are so much easier , but Morson's titles only very very rarely go on sale, so I'm happy to see this one drop to $2.48 at Kindle US.

If you like John Creasey's Department Z series, there are a couple of titles that have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US.

Sabotage, per the blurb, #16 in the series, although this is one of those series where the exact order/numbering is in some doubt: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CMGH353

I don't think I've ever seen Creasey's "The Baron" series on sale. Am I wrong?

I have not seen very many, if any. I did get a lot of Creasey's books, including a bunch of Baron titles, back in the days of frequent high-value Kobo coupons, some of which actually worked. But I don't think I've seen any sales on them since.

The False Inspector Dew is a non-series title by Peter Lovesey. Per SYKM, it won the 1982 Gold Dagger Award. Dew has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, matched at Kobo US.

“Absolutely riveting . . . A masterpiece. I defy anyone to foresee the outcome.”—Ruth Rendell

The year is 1921. A passionate affair between voracious romance reader Alma Webster and her dentist, Walter Baranov, has led to his wife’s murder. The lovers take flight aboard the Mauretania and the dentist takes the name of Inspector Dew, the detective who arrested the notorious wifekiller Dr. Crippen. But, in a disquieting twist, a murder occurs aboard ship and the captain invites “Inspector Dew” to investigate.

Not Quite Dead Enough is another rare US price drop on a title in Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003M5IUSY
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/not-quite-dead-enough

Spoiler:
Quote:
The army wants Nero Wolfe urgently, but he refuses their clarion call to duty. It takes Archie Goodwin to titillate Wolfe’s taste for crime with two malevolent morsels: a corpse that refuses to rest in peace and a sinister “accident” involving national security. It’s up to the Grandiose Master himself, Nero Wolfe, to set the traps to catch a pair of wily killers—as Archie lays the bait on the wrong side of the law.

All ten of the titles in the Ruth Galloway series by Elly Griffiths are part of the US Kindle Daily Deal today, priced at either $1.99 or $2.99, matched at Kobo. I've read and enjoyed several of the titles in this series, and am happy to see the rest on sale. I would think this is in honor of the new title in the series, but that's not coming out until May, 2019, which is quite a ways away. Maybe they think it will take us that long to read the previous ten .

Kobo US (with a couple strays at the end): https://www.kobo.com/us/en/search?Qu...9&fcmedia=Book

In addition, there is a free novella in the series, Ruth's First Christmas Tree.
