A bit more info ...

When I did that test both ClaraHD and Forma had their "Natural light" set at 0%. I just looked again in "full blue" mode in a completely dark room:
Clara@1% brightness < Forma@1% < Clara@2%

The interesting thing is, if both devices have "Natural light" set to 100% (i.e. "full orange") then in the same dark room:
Forma@1% brightness < Clara@1%

I'm guessing, the latter scenario is more typical for nighttime readers.

ETA: I'll also mention, for those who like to tinker, the existing Nightmode hack seems to work fine on the Forma. As far as I know it doesn't work on the KA1.

Okay, last night while I was reading in bed, I adjusted the brightness even further to 9% and could still see the streak.

As my eyes adjusted, it became even more prominent. (Did about 5 hours of reading last night + this morning.)

While my eyes read the:
  • Text on the left. I noticed it out of the corner.
  • Middle, not so much.
  • Text on the right. Definitely noticed it.

So I was continually just subconsciously flip-flopping. A little frustrating.

* * *

I took some photos of my screen in the complete darkness.

Note: I am no good with cameras/exposure. So I admit it's a little tough to see in the pictures I took. Looks WAY different in person though.

and here's one where I adjusted the gray levels (of 25% Reddish) so you can clearly see the streak:

In the daytime, and "normal" lighting conditions, I'll have to admit it's not that noticeable.

But I do almost all of my reading at night, in the pitch black, under the covers.

I force the device into Portrait mode, lay it down on its side and prop it against a pillow, and lay sideways while reading with my head propped on my other pillow.

With the fat edge on my left, the streak was much less bothersome. Maybe it has something to do with all the lines starting at the streak, so my eyes just drift away and I can ignore the streak.

When I tested the opposite, with fat edge down + my eyes heading towards the streak, then it was bothering me.

Can you link to the one you used? Last I checked the night mode thread(s) were a mess of different options for different devices using various methods.

lol. Whoops. And about 20 minutes later I post using a mix of all of that!

I'll have to keep that in mind in future posts, MGlitch:

Fat side up/down/left/right! Away/Towards streak!

.... going to be needing to draw X/Y/Z axis diagrams soon.

At least with your post we can figure out where the streak is for you.

I was more so talking about people that literally only said left side or right side with nothing to indicate how they were holding the Forma.

I know I alternate, if I’m sitting I hold it in my left hand when I’m laying down I hold it in my right hand.

I haven’t noticed a streak either way. It’s possible it’s there and it just doesn’t bother me so I don’t notice it, or that it’s not there. In either case I’m more inclined not to look for a fault.

I use the patches to get the margins as thin as possible without having the text run right on the bezel. The left and right margins are quite thin, with the top and bottom margins close enough that I cannot get another line of text in either of them. This is with a fairly small font size comparable to a mass market book with smaller line spacing.

Use the one called kobo-nightmode_build13.zip at gtalusan's GitHub website here.

There is an installer and an uninstaller in the zip download. More detail, including config options, can also be found there.

By reading great books!

For the past few years, I just propped my phone against the pillow and read along with TTS.

Usually get in at least an hour worth of reading every night.

Fall asleep? Just return to the last spot I remember!

Now with this Kobo, I could just read in the dark until I sleep, and it'll shut itself off in 15 minutes of inactivity.

I ordered it over a week ago on their web site and was notified by email that it was ready to be picked up.

Edit: By the way I had difficulty successfully connecting the Forma to my computer using a 3rd-party cable. I have had no problems since switching to the cable that came in the package.

Here are two side by side. There is no winning this lottery given it’s by design.

Thank you so much, Jackie! This is the news I've been waiting for!

I wonder if the hack could be upgraded so that, say, a simultaneous press of both Page-Up and Page-Down would toggle it; THAT would be way cool.
