I just read this from the post above by daffy4u and would like some clarification:

"Subscription content can only be downloaded to one Kindle at a time, and only the seven most recent issues will be available for redownload in the Kindle Content Manager or from the Manage Your Kindle page."

If I understand this correctly, it would mean that if I subscribed to the New York Times, I would have not be able to access any issue older than 7 days if I deleted it from my Kindle. Is it possible to backup subscription content to my computer? What's the reasoning behind only making the 7 most recent issues available for redownload?

Sorry, I'm new to the Kindle world and did not notice this clause in my research.

That's exactly what I've done. I've backed up all my books and subscriptions to my computer. In fact, I do a backup once a week to be on the safe side.

I *think* (I don't know) Amazon believes that over time their servers would be overwhelmed if they kept every copy of every newspaper and daily blog.

I expected that it was the media companies not wanting Amazon to be an archive for all their content. They want to be able to sell access to back issues I would expect.

I wanted to update my reply to you. It seems there has been a change on keeping old newspaper issues. I found this deep in the online help file. Now you really have to back up regularly.

Older issues of newspapers and magazines appear inside a grouping called "Periodicals: Back Issues." Selecting the grouping takes you to a screen that displays the back issues you have on your Kindle.

Kindle automatically deletes issues that are more than seven issues old to free up space for new content. An exclamation point next to an issue indicates that it will be deleted within 48 hours. If you'd like to keep a copy of an issue, you need to adjust the settings for each issue you wish to keep.
To keep a back issue:

1. Open the specific issue from the Kindle Home screen.
2. Press the Menu button and select "Keep This Issue."

You will then see the word "keep" to the left of the issue title in Home.

Whew! I was afraid that my back issues of Analog and Asimov's were lost! But the K1 does not have that feature!

I just checked with my back issues of Alfred Hitchcock....the oldest being last July. No "Keep this issue" found. Good!

And, I guess Amazon is using this so that you won't run out of space on your K2.

Something that wouldn't have even been an issue if they had kept the memory card slot.

I believe the confusion comes from the section on the support page regarding Digital Rights Management.

After contacting Amazon Customer Service a couple of times, I received this response with clarification (bold added by me).

But if you have more than six, which six can you read it on and how does Amazon know you're reading? Seems like it would have to be tied to the PID when you DL the book. Maybe it would be that you could only DL it to six and it would be the first six to try to DL.

I don't think Amazon's servers are going to run out of space after a couple years. Here is why: at 10 megabyte per edition, times 400 days per year, times 10 years, times 100 different newspapers, file compress by a factor of 4 - you get a whopping 10^12 bytes, which is 1000^4, which is a Terabyte's worth of data. You can buy a disk drive with this capacity for a little over one hundred dollars.

Truth..

Amazon has prices new releases and best sellers at $9.99. There are many ebooks in the store that are less than this, with many free selections. There are also many in the store that cost more than this price.
