Catalog Confusion

I'm trying to create a catalog but for some reason (at least when I open it) the information for one book is spread over 2 rows.

I've attached a copy of a test catalog I just made.

CSV is a TXT preadsheet format. If you open it withe a Text editor, it follows the Editors settings.
If you open it with Excel or OO Calc it looked fin (unless there was just one book on the list with issues that I did not catch)

Note Commas in names can throw CSV rows off

I have no idea why it only happens when I have the comments column turned on, and it's on all the stories.

I have no idea why it only happens when I have the comments column turned on, and it's on all the stories.

That could indicate a blank line (and a lot of columns), or a comment with a lot of blank (non-printing) lines (hard to spot. Maybe someone has query for a comment over a certain length or repeated pattern)

Have you run Library Maintenance recently? There may be errors.

I just ran a test CSV on my Library with Comments ON. No issue.
Looking at the CSX with Notepad++, I see comments with a lot of trailing whitespace. I opened the title with the MDE, and sure enough, I could select (and delete) an area after the last text. Maybe a Comments Cleanup tool is needed ( remove all styles, truncate trailing whitespace... )

I've run the "check library" it didn't give me any errors and when I after created a new catalog the same thing happened.

Just a thought. You see this in Excel? What was the Import Delimiter set at?

What if you opened it in Notepad(++), wordwrap OFF
do you see this?

I don't see all the commas but it's still at least 2 lines per epub.

I've discovered that some of the times it changes the row it's because the comments contain more than one line (with enter).

I see this also in Notepad, But OO calc keeps it in the proper column (however many lines)

Can you set the delimiter for export? Instead of using comma, perhaps use tab instead. That's less likely to be used in metadata.

Going back a few years when I generated some catalogs with calibre but I seem to remember the fields enclosed in quotes so you can have an embedded comma. Unfortunately, there were embedded LF's in some of the fields which made for interesting looking Excel spreadsheets.

Comments is not last in the sample you posted, it lies between #fandom and languages, and the comments all end with a LF - so there are Line feeds in the middle of a line ('record'). The LF character normally denotes the end of a line ('record') in a so-called CSV file.

I forgot, unfortunately you can't specify a separator in the GUI CSV catalog feature.

But the calibredb --list command has a separator option, I have a vague memory that it had a problem with very long comments. That was a long time ago.

There is a calibredb --catalog command too, but the doco only refers to EPUB output.
