According to this video, the backside of the Forma is not slippery as stated here and has a rubber texture.

Not to mention that if someone favours reading, and regards that as the priority, they'll say bugger you to kobo and not update their ereader, eh (and after all, Amazon ebooks are quite often cheaper than Kobo and very easy to to reformat the font )
Sorry, but I don't think it is expensive and I will gladly buy one ASAP.

Just because you find it to be expensive and not worth it doesn't make your opinion a given for the rest of human kind.

I bought my KA1 exactly two years ago, which boils its costs down to 10€ per month. As ebooks are cheaper than paper books I still save a lot of money on books compared to my pre-reader spending AND have a better reading experience.

I also use the library heavily since I got an ereader. When it meant going to the library to borrow books I never did that, because I always ended up being late and paying fines. I do read two to three books per week and used to spend between 200€ and 400€ per month on books. Now I am down to maybe 20€ monthly.

I'd gladly spend 500€ every two years on a new ereader if they'd cost as much and still be a happy money saving camper.

This device looks amazing, god damn. Can anyone fill me in on what's possible on the Kobo OS? I know you can get some apps like Pocket but what about browsers and such? What are the apps I should look into?

There aren't really any add on apps. Pocket is built in to the Kobo environment but only for articles.

There are a few replacement reading apps for Kobo; koReader for instance, and a launcher called KSM (Kobo Start Menu).

Check the dev forum here to see what has been done.

Small but significant correction, KOReader, Coolreader, and Plato are not "replacement" reading apps. They don't replace the existing stock reading apps, the stock apps remain there and function just as they always did (good or bad). KSM lets you launch Nickel just as it allows you to launch any of the other three. You can switch around through the KSM menu, as you wish.

Luck;
Ken

While I understand that "too expensive" is a subjective term, I agree with the poster you're responding to that this is expensive when compared to other eReaders — and well beyond the price of what I (personally) can justify spending for an eReader. All the cost saving (buying eBooks and borrowing eBooks) can also be applied to a used eReader that costs a tenth of the price.

Indeed.com's salary surveys, for example, indicate that average Australian salary for an office clerk is about 80% more than the average office clerk's salary in Canada

More money chasing the goods means higher prices. That's what they tell us in economics class anyway. I suspect part of it may also be tariffs and they've got the populace used to paying more for everything.

It's like how the publishers get us to pay more for hardcover books than paperbacks when, in quantity, they cost almost the same to make and ship.

Thank you for your research

What hasn't been factored in by those who sell their products at higher prices here than a lot of other countries, is that we have a very high shopping abroad ratio, and government approval to bypass geo fences.

So, that evens things out, but the big companies still persist in trying it on

Just wondering about pricing in Canada...

On Amazon Canada's website the Kindle Oasis E-reader - 7" High-Resolution Display (300 ppi), Waterproof, 8 GB, Wi-Fi, is currently priced at CDN $389.99+tax.

On Kobo Canada's website, the Kobo Forma - 8.0" 300 PPI 8GB Waterproof Wi-Fi is going to be offered at CDN $299.99+tax

So, isn't the Forma competitively priced for the high-end market (in Canada at least), or am I missing something?

Definitely competitively priced vs. the Oasis in Canada. I don't understand why the Oasis is so expensive in Canada (it's $270 in the U.S. without special offers). There is only a $10 difference between the Oasis and Forma in the U.S. Weird.

I notice the Voyage is in the lineup in Canada? (Although it says "Currently Unavailable".)

Apparently Amazon applies the same logic to Canada as Kobo does to Australia . Amazon have always (especially on their higher end models) seemed to be priced out of line in Canada vs the US. Although, even when the exchange rate is relatively stable, Kobo also does charge a premium in the US vs what you can buy the device for in Canada with US $ so go figure.

Without a doubt there will be people re-selling because they didn't like them, so if you find the full price too much, a second hand unit might work for you
