I finished The Woman Next Door by Cass Green. Very entertaining book. One of those twisty thrillers.

Next up is Rogue Gunslinger by B.J. Daniels. The second book in the Clementine Sisters trilogy.(harlequin intrigue)

I finished The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde a few days ago. Very good fun, a firm 4/5. I liked his mix of contemporary with medieval kingdoms and magic - I doubt if it would stand much scrutiny if taken too seriously, but for a fun little adventure with dragons it worked very well.

And this afternoon, when I should have been working, I finished Turtles All The Way Down by John Green. Neatly constructed, eloquently expressed, compelling and emotionally moving. I loved it, 5/5 for me. Yes, there is some cliché and melodrama in there, but these are teenagers we're talking about, so it fits perfectly.

Love this book. I'm two thirds of the way through Record of a Spaceborn Few and rapidly approaching the end of The Fellowship of the Ring on audio. I will probably invest the money in The Two Towers once I am done.

And now I've started on The Horse Lord by Peter Morwood. The start of an epic fantasy trilogy. Looking good so far.

I enjoyed it as well. Also gave it a 4/5 rating. Fforde's books are so original and the world's he creates are often fascinating.

I must have misread the blurb. Abraham Lincoln turned out to be Abraham Van Helsing. The Nazi's were really a British secret agency. And Victorian England lasted for 8 pages. I got Frankenstein right. A cautionary tale about impulse purchases.

Anyway, this was ok. It does take some suspension of belief to get through it. Very unrealistic for a secret government agency and its procedures. Book contains considerable violence consisting of people getting hacked to pieces. Blood fest extraordinaire. The usual YA love interest. Mystery and suspense tossed in too. This may just be enough to continue the series, if I run across a heavy discount. Rated C- [2 stars].

Next TBD but will be a recent pick-up.

A C- and you're willing to even consider the rest of the series? Surely your time is worth more than that?!

Just finished the last of three "Owl" Valdemar books from Mercedes Lackey. Not her best series, which is a shame, because the characters in it were ones I wanted to follow. 3 Stars, only because I'm a sucker.

Next up, finishing In Pieces, Sally Field's memoir. And finding a new book to listen to while swimming.

My average is 2.71 (321 books rated) so a rating of two stars isn't too terrible. I thought now that the background and awkward coming-of-age parts were dealt with the story will improve.

I did enjoy Lockdown much more.

Finished. It was okay for what it was. Light, fluffy romantic suspense.

In the mood for some Science Fiction so going to start A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White. Bought this on sale last month.

I've been stuck at home sick for a few days, and have been greatly enjoying the Pennington Wise detective novels by Carolyn Wells, uploaded to our MR Library by the industrious Pulpmeister. Check them out, and other Pulpmeister uploads, for some vintage locked room or impossible murder scenario based mysteries.

I'm really enjoying re-reading/listening to some of the classic SciFi short stories from "The Science Fiction Hall of Fame, Volume 1". My book is probably 45-50 years old, broken off into many sections, held together by a big rubber band. For the stories that are too hard to read due to book damage, I'm listening to the audiobook version.

I had forgotten how good many of these stories are. The Weapon Shop, First Contact, Flowers for Algernon, Twilight, ... I don't know if they're really as good as I'm thinking, or if I'm just living through some nostalgia having read these when I was in Jr. High/High School. But whatever the cause - I'm enjoying myself! I'm currently in the middle of, and enthralled with Flowers for Algernon. What a nicely told story. I seem to remember that was required reading sometime back in my school life.
