Exclamation What is the Highest FW Version w/o Getting Bricked?
Hey all,

My Kobo Mini is currently running Kobo firmware version 3.19.5761, which I updated to (from 3.4.1, which is the latest official version the Kobo can run).

Can I go any higher? I mean, I bricked it before, and I wrote a whole tutorial thread about unbricking a Kobo (feel free to check that out), but it is a pain in the bum and I don't want to risk it.

So, 3.19.5761 is max, right?

I don't think so. I think folks are running 4.8.x on Kobo Minis. Not sure if the software has to be patched before being installed or not. I may be wrong (may have misread the post), so check it out carefully.

Even if I could, I wouldn't run 4.X on the Mini.

Too much for the processor, I guess.

I'm not sure why you think that. Every firmware thread has two posts. On the first or second page, will be a post asking if the firmware will work on a Mini. And then a couple of pages someone will state it is working fine.

The Mini has the same CPU as the Glo. The 4.x.x firmware runs on this fine. The only real question is whether some change has been made that won't work at the resolution the Mini screen is. So far, the support is still there.

That I can't answer. There are differences (new home screen, series sorting, author list come to mind, performance improvements), but whether these are things you want is up to you. There is a thread here for each release. Early in the thread is details of the changes. You can look at these and decide. The threads are linked Kobo Firmware Releases in the Wiki.

When we updated her Mini, we did it in two steps. First we downloaded the Mark4 4.9.11311 firmware update and applied it to her Mini (unpack the .zip file on my computer and copy both files and the directory into the .kobo directory on her Mini, safely eject it and let the firmware update happen). We then downloaded the Mark6 4.10.11655 firmware, unpacked the .zip file and copied only the KoboRoot.tgz file to the .kobo directory on her Mini. After safely ejecting, it updated and all seemed to be happy. The intermediate step to the 4.9 release was likely not necessary but that was the latest version with Mark4 support.

Thinking about it, it might be more correct to say that she hasn't contacted me to say she's having any issues.

- 4.10.11655 is not for Mark 4 devices. How did the update work on the Mini?

- It should have either crashed or be stuck on the loading screen forever. How come it is not bricked?

- Did you patch it?

- What IS patching anyway?

- Are you sure she has a Mini?

- If that is so, what Beta Features are there on 4.9.11311 and 4.10.11655? Do they have the same Beta Features?

Reread his answer. What they did is first upgrade the full firmware to the latest for Mark 4, and then take only KoboRoot.tgz from Mark 6. Full firmware probably contains specific drivers etc for the Mark 4, while KoboRoot.tgz contains more general stuff.

Patching has nothing to do with ensuring firmware compatibility. Patching is a nice way to tweak firmware that is already installed. (For instance, removing certain parts of the home screen from view, or making advanced font settings visible for sideloaded, etc.)

They should all still be there (though they are hidden on newer devices from Glo HD onwards if I recall correctly - and they can then be unhidden with... a patch . )
