Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 romantic novel by Jane Austen. It charts the emotional development of protagonist Elizabeth Bennet, who learns the error of making hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between the superficial and the essential. The comedy of the writing lies in the depiction of manners, education, marriage, and money during the British Regency period.

Mr. Bennet of the Longbourn estate has five daughters, but his property is entailed, meaning that none of the girls can inherit it. His wife has no fortune, so it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well in order to support the others upon his death. Jane Austen's opening line, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife", is a sentence filled with irony and playfulness. The novel revolves around the importance of marrying for love, not simply for money, despite the social pressures to make a good (i.e., wealthy) match.

Note: I have no idea who the narrator of this book is. Audible has nearly 200 versions and I own four of them. Asking Alexa to play this book will more than likely lead her to play a version I already own. I know this from past experience.

I wish Amazon/Audible would either list the current free listen(s) in the Alexa app along with a link to the version they're using or have Alexa announce both the author and narrator when asked: "Alexa, what's free from Audible?"

On channels and shows: if you are a UK member there’s a lot for free purchases under shows. A lot of the stuff that was on US channels but other things I haven’t seen on the US site. Audible theatre collection, Kermode on film, David Suchet on faith, days that changed the world, history revealed, when the world listened, Stephen Fry, Bill Bryson, etc. my favorites.

I'm an "Inactive Listener" at Audible.

I logged on to Audible, to get information for my following post and, lo and behold, Audible offered to sell me "3 extra credits." As you probably know, the Inactive Light membership _is not a credit membership_.

Something strange is going on. Could it be that Audible has repented of its ways? Or maybe Jeffrey Bezos saw my post a day or two ago, in which I (sarcastically) said that I was starting an Audible fan club, asking for people to join, but no one, to his embrassment and shame, did join. I don't know.

I wonder if this means that I can still purchase Daily Deals.

I can't explore this further right now--I feel that it's more important to make the next post. After I do that, I plan to hit the sack. Hopefully another "Inactive Listener" will pick up the investigation of this mystery . . . .

Get an audiobook of _A Tramp across the Country_, from Audible. at a great price.

The book/audiobook is about a man's travels and explorations across America. The book, published in 1893 (it was a little too early for audiobooks then ), made the man world famous. The subject of the book, and its author are the same--Charles Fletcher Lummis.

This audiobook tells about America, when she was in a very different time, and was a very different place, from what she is today.

Ratings are sparse for the audiobook. They're more abundant, and very good, for the book, at Amazon and Goodreads.

Amazing, the 6 hour, 36 minute audiobook is only _$5.95_, now, at Audible. Amazon has an edition of the ebook for _99 cents_, that will probably sync with the Audible audiobook. The audiobook is available at several other places, too--they are listed near the bottom of the website, which address I gave you above.
