Went to Target today to get my wife a new digital point and shoot camera that she can keep in the diaper bag for our baby. She's still trying to learn my Nikon D70, but wanted something smaller to take with her to capture those special moments. While we were looking at cameras, I walked around the electronics section and spied a silver PRS-505...the last one. So I got it.

I've already been downloading a bunch of books from this site that I can read to our baby when he gets a little older (Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Jules Verne, H.P. Lovecraft, etc.) It's charging now. I'll have to go get a PSP charger next payday.

How are painted the blue and red one? Is it tainted in the mass, or normal paint?

Nobody noticed some problems with the blue or red paint peeling out in the areas most used (buttons, etc.) ?

I suspect the color is baked in. Have not heard anyone complain of paint peeling or fading in heavily used areas.

Yeah, I even suspect the silver color is just superficial as well. I've had some silver colored electronics (plastic cases) that I have worn through the silver color around sharp edges with use/abuse. A few edges on my Nintendo DS are white where I've worn the silver off. Since the case is metal on the readers, the colors should be a LOT more durable since they're probably baked on.

I can completely confirm that the color goes all the way through. How do I know this? I dropped my Reader on some asphalt and took a good chunk out of the corner. I have a blue one, and the blue goes all the way through.

I tell you what, the thing that suprises me most is the paint on the keys. Mine hasn't worn down at all.

Can paint "go through"? Maybe the metal just happens to be black? I wasn't aware of metal-permeating paint, but then I'm also not a metallurgist. I would imagine you could add some kind of dye when you smelt, but I'm really out of my league here.

What I really wanted to say is that I'm a little happy to hear your comment on the button-paint. Most of the Sony readers on display in the Sony Style store (the 505's anyway, not the lone 700) all had faded button-paint. Some of the icons were almost completely rubbed off.

Of course, I'm sure those units get felt up quite a bit. They also had wear and tear on the edges, and the paint did not seem to go through. However, it was more of a stressy looking, metallic silver. I forget what the silver unit looked like. I think it might have been a darker silver.

No, it's definitely blue. No clue how they do it, but it works. That's weird about the store units...

And the anodizing process plates it inside and out, so you think it goes "through" but it's really just all surfaces.

My silver 505 gets me lots of dates. And at 50, I can use all the dates I can get.

In the blue it is all the way through though. I swear I'm not crazy.

As a happily married man and new father, should I be worried at the power of the Silver 505 to attract the opposite sex and possibly create problems, through no fault of my own, in my wedded bliss?

I can already see the new Sony slogan:

"The PRS-505: The ultimate wingman."

My girlfriend has gotten jealous a few times. I have had one waitress and two airline stewardesses lean in to ask me about my device.

**By the way I am talking about my Sony Reader**

Actually, you should buy the cheapest, and put a skin on it.
