I did as you stated and it seems to work for me. I did not know where to look for the "view log" button.
And, most important, THANK YOU. Al |

Still seeing some weirdness. As reported by someone earlier in this thread, Calibre now wants to use metadata from the audiobook version of my eBooks.
Also seeing some of this: calibre, version 3.31.0 ERROR: Download failed: Failed to download metadata or cover for the selected book. (Failed metadata) (Failed cover) |

This thread was about a TOTAL FAILURE to download ANY metadata series info is dependent on : The metadata sources selected The CONFIGURATION of each site as to what fields you allow from that source The OVERALL configuration for download metadata. Sites change, allowing a tiny number of sources makes the chance you get failures. OTOH this also makes it easy to know about fails and REPORT them here (I said here, because some sites are handled by user installed PI. If you only use stock Calibre, file a Bug Report) |

Ok. That does show the series information being pulled, but why isn't it automatically putting in the series column anymore? It doesn't show in the individual book information either even after it shows up in the log. Do I need to fill out series information manually for each book from now on? Thank you!

I run a win 10 pro 64bit pc and experienced the issue after I installed the new update.
In fact, for the first book I tried to download metadata for it searched and found them, but then displayed an error message for the cover. Repairing, un-installing and rolling back a version, and finally re-installing did not solve the problem... same exact issue, same exact message ![]() I hope some clever guy solves it for the rest of us. Thanks in advance! |

There have not been any changes to metadata download other than the original breakage, which prevented metadata download from working at all.
@Lily7 check your metadata preferences you probably turned off series update in Preferences->Metadata download |

@Kovid - curious, should I infer from all this, that metadata downloads not only access metadata sites (Amazon, Goodreads etc), but also the calibre server for any updates to the metadata-sources-cache.json dataset?
If not, how were you able to fix everyone's system without a creating a new version. What happens if the calibre server is unreachable - I can guess the answer, but ... BR |

No. The plugins dont access the server. The plugins themselves are updated from the server. This is true for most parts of calibre that have to scrape websites, such as the recipes, get books and metadata download.
This is done so that calibre continues to work for its users when the websites change without needing to continually upgrade calibre itself. And if the calibre server is ever down, all that will happen is the plugins will not update themselves any more. And wil linstead be updated when you update calibre. |

I knew about news recipes, and get-books screen scraping 'auto updates'.
I assumed the "screen scrape code" for metadata source plugins was in the code - so if the site layout changes the plugin would need updating. But thinking about it now, that wouldn't do for the built-in metadata source plugins like Amazon, Google etc. BR |

Select each source (1 at a time) then use the Configure Selected sources button (its done this way, so you can 'Cherry Pick' metadata by source ![]() |

Thanks! I checked, that was turned on as well. I decided to add Amazon as a metadata source and it pulled series data from that, so it seems like it's just the Goodreads metadata that is broken. Maybe an issue on Goodread's end. I prefer their metadata over others, but I will take Amazon's for now. I hope the Goodreads metadata gets fixed.
