Watchers of Time is the fifth in the Inspector Ian Rutledge series by Charles Todd. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Quote:
“If anyone can turn a simple village mystery into a brooding Greek tragedy, it’s Charles Todd. . . . Todd handles grave issues with great compassion”—The New York Times Book Review

In a marshy Norfolk backwater, a priest is brutally murdered after giving a dying man last rites. For Scotland Yard’s Ian Rutledge, an ex-officer still recovering from the trauma of war, it looks to be a simple case. Yet the Inspector finds himself uncovering secrets that the local authorities would prefer not to see explored. Rutledge pares away layers of deception to piece together a chain of events that stretches from the brooding marshes to one of the greatest sea disasters in history—the sinking of the Titanic. Who is the mysterious woman who may have boarded that ship—and who is the secretive woman who survived it? Only Rutledge can answer those questions . . . and prevent a killer who’ll stop at nothing from striking again.

A Purple Place for Dying is the third in the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. This is another series whose titles don't go on sale very often, in the US at least, so grab it if you want it.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Purple-Place-...dp/B009FKVX8O/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-p...lace-for-dying

Spoiler:
Quote:
From a beloved master of crime fiction, A Purple Place for Dying is one of many classic novels featuring Travis McGee, the hard-boiled detective who lives on a houseboat.

Travis McGee’s taking his retirement in installments while he’s still young enough to enjoy it. But sooner or later, his money runs out and he has to work. This time McGee’s lured out West to a strangely secretive meeting with a woman in trouble, in a place whose beauty hides some ugly, dangerous secrets.

“John D. MacDonald created a staggering quantity of wonderful books, each rich with characterization, suspense, and an almost intoxicating sense of place.”—Jonathan Kellerman

Mona is in love with a poor, young college professor and married to a wealthy man whom she is convinced is stealing from her trust fund. So she does what any self-respecting girl would do: She hires someone to steal her money back so she can run away with the love of her life.

Travis isn’t sure he wants to help out until he sees Mona getting shot and killed out on the cliffs near her cabin. Now he’s a lead suspect in a plot to help her escape, and to clear his name, he needs to get to the bottom of things. But the murders just keep mounting, and for Travis, even working with Mona’s husband doesn’t seem to help matters. Will he be able to uncover the complex plot in time to save his own skin?

Features a new Introduction by Lee Child

Rough Weather is, according to the blurb (I was too lazy to count at SYKM), the 36th in the Spenser series by Robert B Parker. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

I've never read any of Stuart Kaminsky's CSI series, but have read a few of his Porfiry Rostnikov and Toby Peters books, and enjoyed them. Now Blood on the Sun, which is CSI #2, has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, which is maybe worth trying...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Sun-CSI...dp/B000GCFCSC/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/blood-on-the-sun-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
Detective Mac Taylor is a dedicated crime scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and everyone has a story. He and Detective Stella Bonasera lead a team of crack forensic experts through the gritty and kinetic world of New York City as they piece together clues and eliminate doubt to ultimately crack their cases.

A modest home in a suburban Queens neighborhood is the unlikely site of a grisly crime scene: a married couple and their daughter are found brutally murdered. Missing from the scene is the couple's young son, and Mac Taylor and Danny Messer soon uncover signs of a possible kidnapping. Can they find him before it's too late?

In a heavily Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn, the body of a devoutly religious man is found ritually displayed on the floor of his synagogue. Stella Bonasera and Aiden Burn initially suspect a fringe fundamentalist group that has had run-ins with the victim's congregation, but the group is led by a charismatic and antagonistic man who does everything he can to stonewall the team's investigation.

Two very different crimes, with one thing in common: CSI investigators who won't stop until they uncover the truth.

The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing is the second in the Vish Puri series by Tarquin Hall, several of which I've read and liked. Laughing has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003L786U0
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...ied-laughing-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
The latest adventures of Indian detective Vish Puri continues the series that “immediately joins the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency as representing the best in international cozies” (Booklist, starred review).

Murder is no laughing matter.

Yet a prominent Indian scientist dies in a fit of giggles when a Hindu goddess appears from a mist and plunges a sword into his chest.

The only one laughing now is the main suspect, a powerful guru named Maharaj Swami, who seems to have done away with his most vocal critic.

Vish Puri, India’s Most Private Investigator, master of disguise and lover of all things fried and spicy, doesn’t believe the murder is a supernatural occurrence, and proving who really killed Dr. Suresh Jha will require all the detective’s earthly faculties. To get at the truth, he and his team of undercover operatives—Facecream, Tubelight, and Flush—travel from the slum where India’s hereditary magicians must be persuaded to reveal their secrets to the holy city of Haridwar on the Ganges.

How did the murder weapon miraculously crumble into ash? Will Maharaj Swami have the last laugh? And perhaps more important, why is Puri’s wife, Rumpi, chasing petty criminals with his Mummy-ji when she should be at home making his rotis?

Stopping only to indulge his ample Punjabi appetite, Puri uncovers a web of spirituality, science, and sin unique in the annals of crime.

The Immaculate Deception is the seventh and last in the Jonathan Argyll/Flavia di Stefano series by Iain Pears, who is much better known, I think for his non-series title, An Instance of the Fingerpost. This is one of my top ten or fifteen favorite series, and I really really wish Pears would write some more of these. Deception has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Immaculate-De...dp/B000FCKA1M/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...te-deception-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
From internationally bestselling author Iain Pears comes the seventh in his Jonathan Argyll series -- an intriguing mystery of love, loss, and artistic license.

For newlywed and Italian art theft squad head Flavia di Stefano, the honeymoon is over when a painting, borrowed from the Louvre and en route to a celebratory exhibition, is stolen. Desperate to avoid public embarrassment -- and to avoid paying a ransom -- the Italian prime minister leans hard on Flavia to get it back quickly and quietly.

Across town, her husband, art historian Jonathan Argyll, begins an investigation of his own, tracing the past of a small Renaissance painting -- an Immaculate Conception -- owned by Flavia's mentor, retired general Taddeo Bottando. Soon both husband and wife uncover astonishing and chilling secrets, and Flavia's investigation takes a sudden turn from the search for an art thief to the hunt for a murderer.

Believing the Lie is the 17th in the Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005OH9MIA
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/believing-the-lie-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
#1 New York Times bestselling author of The Punishment She Deserves Elizabeth George has millions of fans following her Inspector Lynley series. As USA Today put it, "It's tough to resist George's storytelling, once hooked." With Believing the Lie, she's poised to hook countless more.

Inspector Thomas Lynley is mystified when he's sent undercover to investigate the death of Ian Cresswell at the request of the man's uncle, the wealthy and influential Bernard Fairclough. The death has been ruled an accidental drowning, and nothing on the surface indicates otherwise. But when Lynley enlists the help of his friends Simon and Deborah St. James, the trio's digging soon reveals that the Fairclough clan is awash in secrets, lies, and motives.

Deborah's investigation of the prime suspect--Bernard's prodigal son Nicholas, a recovering drug addict--leads her to Nicholas's wife, a woman with whom she feels a kinship, a woman as fiercely protective as she is beautiful. Lynley and Simon delve for information from the rest of the family, including the victim's bitter ex-wife and the man he left her for, and Bernard himself. As the investigation escalates, the Fairclough family's veneer cracks, with deception and self-delusion threatening to destroy everyone from the Fairclough patriarch to Tim, the troubled son Ian left behind.

Thanks for reminding me of that series. I already had The Immaculate Deception, from back in ereader/fictionwise days, but I'd never found any others, although I think I've read all or most of them in paperback form.

I just looked and both Amazon UK and Kobo UK also have the first four -- The Raphael Affair, The Titian Committee, The Bernini Bust, and The Last Judgement (Giotto's Hand and Death and Restoration are still missing). The third one, The Titian Committee, is only £0.99.

I'm impatient so I got all four (total £14.46). I bought them from Kobo because I'm not brave enough to travel at Amazon.

Glad to remind you of more books for your TBR pile

That's what I have noted too - that Giotto's Hand and Death and Restoration are still not available as e-books, and none except Immaculate Deception available in the US. I ended up getting pdf scans made of used DTB copies of the two that are still not available at all.

And another freebie from a 'current' (re-release) series:

Shard calls the Tune, Simon Shard series #6.

Again, not sure what Amazon are up to - they claim it's #6/6 but Goodreads list a whole lot more . . . . . .
