I don't remember the author's name. For that I'd have to open it again.(last time was about 20 years ago)
The title though is 'Traité des Sciences Naturelles'. It was covered at some point in rough sheep skin. That skin is very tight now. I wouldn't want to crack it.

Then one day the shelves collapsed under the weight of all the books and we boxed them up. About that time we discovered that Son was on the way and I lost the room to him.

Most of my pBooks are in storage now and I have been slowly repurchasing them in eBook format. I still miss seeing all my books on display, the different colours and type settings on the spines, it made a nice art display on my wall. I had my books all sorted by Author and Series and was able to just grab the book I want. As soon as my Cybook gets folder support I will be closer to being able to grab my eBooks just as easily as I use to from my physical bookshelf.

I'll be sure to use more sturdy shelves for my books

I bet there is a company that makes wall paper with the image of books on shelves... interesting titles, leather bound. Hm... now I want to use it.

today i gave away three more books. it doesn't sound like much but little by little i can start to see the difference (especially since last week i gave away about 20 ). all three of them were classics that i replaced for free ; in fact, the epub version of Le mystère de la chambre jaune by Gaston Leroux, which jellby made, is actually nicer to look at than the cheap pocket edition i had.

Well, we've just finished the attic enough to see the space for the books will be enormous...

So, no book-givings from me yet

maybe i should look on the bright side : now i don't have to be frustrated that i don't know anyone with a scanner like that.
Is there such a thing as a scanner where you don't have to scan each individual page?

A duplex scanner will do both sides of the page at once. But this means destroying the book by cutting the pages away from the book spine.
I've recently bought a small Fujitsu Scansnap and am planning to carve up some old (and non-valuable) paperbacks.

Yes, but the actual scanning is already the least time-consuming part of the process (assuming you're OCRing the scans). Proofing and cleaning up errors is far more onerous.

A few points to catch up:
  • If we created Marcus Marc I, do we therefore hold the copyright? Is there DRM to prevent others from copying Marcus Marc I? Can we clone Marcus Marc I? Do we wnat to? Are we afraid to clone Marcus Marc I?
  • There is a small room off the entry hall of the house that is identified in the original builder's brochure for the house as "library" and it has a 6' (H) by 8' (W) built in shelving that we use for cookbooks. It is full and spilling onto the floor. This is one type of pbook that we are not likely to replace.
  • One estimate gives pbooks an R value of 10 for insulation. Thus removing pbooks from exterior walls may make the home colder in winter and warmer in summer. All this will increase your electric/gas/oil bill.
  • I just counted, I have a sheet-fed scanner hooked to this machine, a auto page feeding scanner as part of an all-in-one unit on another machine, and an older HP photo scanner hooked to a third machine. My wife has an HP flat bed scanner for her sewing designs and I believe there is another scanner in the closet. I think I need another scanner.

i don't think a drm has been created that could hold Marcus Marc I.

i finally gave away my cookbooks a while ago. i realised that i never used them ; either i made recipes i knew by heart (and which probably weren't in the cookbooks anyway) or i looked for a recipe online. there is a pretty good site i use a lot marmiton.org and www.101cookbooks.com is my other favorite. the cookbooks were taking up a lot of shelfspace in the kitchen and i don't have enough of it in there ; my kitchen is approximately the size of half a shoebox. and i decided it was more important to have room to store food than to store cookbooks.

now THAT is some useful info !!! i should try to rearrange the house so all the bookshelves are on external walls. silly me, over half of them are not, currently.

using a scanner is the easy part ....

it's the checking/correcting the OCR, the formatting etc is what takes the time ....

Why can't we have an exchange program - the publishers take back the paper version and replace with an electronic versions (FOC of course ).

Sure, I have some free time to scan them this afternoon. After that I can't say for sure. Depends on the book and the binding. Books that are falling apart are more likely to get scanned than those with good binding.
