Kindle to Kobo

I just purchased a Clara HD and used Caibre to move my Kindle books to the Clara. They are there and appear to be good to go. But the books do not show up on the Kobo Desktop app. Is this normal for side loaded books? Any way to get them recognized on the Desktop app?

Nope don't work that way.

BTW how do you like the Clara HD? Any light bleeding problems on the sides?

Yes that's normal. You can't sideload books with the Kobo desktop app. It's only books purchased from the Kobo store.

just picked it up today from Walmart. Transferred my Kindle books to it and that is about it. Have not started to read anything yet. But I don't see anything unusual with the lighting.

I used Calibre to side load them. I just can't see them in the Kobo Desktop App.

That is working as designed. The Kobo desktop application does not show anything about sideloaded books. It is @PurpleStar it is for books purchased from Kobo and downloaded directly to the device or via the application. In past versions you could add books to the app and have that add them to the device, but, I haven't tried that for a long time as calibre is much better for this.

I don't see this being discussed very often, but if all you want to do is view any old epub on your PC/Mac in Kobo Desktop there is a way.

The instructions can be found in this Kobo documentation section 4. Sideloading for Testing Purposes

The relevant part is:
Quote:
Desktop
  1. Open the Kobo Desktop app.
  2. Make sure you have Adobe Digital Editions installed. If you do not wish to install ADE you can skip this step by creating a folder named "My Digital Editions" in your "My Documents" folder. On a Mac, the folder must be named "Digital Editions" instead.
  3. Select the My Books tab in Kobo Desktop and press CTRL+Shift+S on Windows or ⌘+SHIFT+S on a Mac. This will display any files in the “My Digital Editions” folder on your computer with the extension .epub
I just tried it and it seems to work but I've never had any use for it myself. Calibre does everything I need for managing books on several Kobo and Android devices.

Can I create folders or collections in Calibre and have it show up on the Clara? For example, putting all of the Wheel of Time books in one folders, all of the Black Company books in one folder, etc.

There's an important distinction here. Collections are not related to folder/directory structure.

You can use calibre to save all your books to whatever folder structure you like on the Kobo device. To do this you need to configure the 'Save template', on the 'File formats' tab, in your calibre driver (KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended). However, this will not result in Collections being made.

Read this Sticky post for details of how to use calibre to create and maintain your Kobo device's Collections. Please note that it's quite old and Shelves is the old name for Collections.
