I popped by my local Walmart and they were baffled. Had never heard of Kobos. I had to tell them about their own ✲ebooks website page, show them the Walmart ebooks app.

When I'm logged into Kobo and I click on ebooks at Walmart's site, it just takes me to the regular Kobo site.
The-ebook-reader.com pointed out that they have a different price matching policy. They will drop the price before you buy. Or they will price match up to 30 days after purchase. Don't know if that's refund or store credit. Or if it's any ebookstore's price. ETA: Looking at it again, I think the 30 days after is only if the price is lowered on their own site. I stopped at a local Walmart this evening and found the books display along the edge of the electronics section. They had a Kobo Aura One display device that didn't seem to be functional, and a Samsung tablet. They also had a bunch of ebook cards. I quickly looked over one and didn't see a price anywhere, so in order to get the price, I had to scan it at a price scanner a couple aisles away. I don't remember which Sarah J. Maas book it was, but I am not sure whether it was the same as the online Kobo price. They also had gift cards available in several denominations.

I wasn't aware of the limited roll out. I know Rakuten has exchanged distribution access in Japan for placement in the Walmarts, but I wasn't expecting a "✲ebooks by Rakuten Kobo" rebranding, or a limited release. Personally, Kobos seem a better fit for Targets than Walmarts. I hope this all works out.

Everything you can order online with Walmart can be paid for with cash. If you go to payment options and other, it has cash as option. You have to go to any checkout within a certain amount of time (e.g. 48 hours) to pay for it. The price if you choose pickup at store will be lower. When I just tried to put a Kobo Clara for 129.99 into cart with pickup at store, it will reduce the price to $122.xx. And I can pay with cash at a register.

Walmart eBooks has a full page ad in the nyt book review today.( I would post a pic but evidently the mobileread admins think I am a bot or something). I think it is interesting as I don’t think that is Walmart’s demographic.

I went back to the Walmart where I took the pictures on Tuesday. Still no Aura or tablet in the clamp display. The only change is that there are now Aura cases on the pegs that were empty before. I'm guessing the in-store Kobo and eBook sales are almost an afterthought in the big scheme of things.

I did shopping this weekend which brought me to the shopping centers that have each of our super Walmarts near me. Neither had Kobos on display.
One didn’t even have kobo gift cards that I could find, but its book section looked like they might eventually make it over/ rehab it. Very few books at all. Second store had a display of kobo gift cards, but it was odd. You could buy denominations for dollar amounts (that makes sense), or you could buy gift cards for particular books in particular formats. That seems not the best option, since what if someone already has the book, and the card prices seemed inflated. To Kill A Mockingbird, in audiobook, was $27, which seemed quite pricey. I asked there about the Kobos, they didn’t know if there were plans to bring any in store. Their best guess was to check around Black Friday. |
