Hrm. Not sure we got a good enough look to say for contrast. It looks like it paints the screen in multiple passes for the color pictures, and the user in the video clicked the buttons before it was done several times. You can see the buttons appear, and then another 'line' from the next painting pass filling things in and making it sharper. But as the button has already been clicked it bounces off to do something else before you get a good look.
Still, I like the idea of *any* color e-ink device on the market. It means the things we want will be coming eventually. ![]() |

Well, that's one of the colourscreen-contestant in the wild.
According to my calendar, the next wait is for the Pixel Qi's screen off which we should see a prototype in april. Next would be the colour eink prototype, which we've been hearing off for years. Then we only have the Qualcomm's technique left, and then the battle can start. |

I wouldn't read on it even if they'd threaten me with a gun... the contrast really sucks!
![]() what's the point in having color with a screen like that? It's just a worse reading experience. |

I think we need a better example. The angle, the not waiting for the pictures to load before the request for zoom, the background noise (ok, the noise just spoils the effect but has nothing to do with how the machine reads/loads). Mostly, the angle. I think b/w will always be more crisp for reading the written word. The color will be more for magazines and such.

I expect this is a prototype. Would they really bring a product that slow to market?

Looking at the reports and demos I've seen around the web I'd say the display would improve many fold if they just gave it a matte finish.

I'm glad other manufacturers are trying to get their piece of the cake!
Perhaps if they used a more metallic reflective background, or more like a reflector like background (like on a bike, reflecting the light at a certain angle), the screen would have a better appearance than with a plastic white background... It's probably a TFT-based screen with no backlight, which could explain the slightly darker tint (plus the touchscreen layer). |

Thankfully, the FLEPia will be out of my price range for quite sometime.
By the time I'll be able to afford one, the technology will have progressed far enough to make me want one. |
