Payment in Blood is the second in the Inspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Payment-Blood...dp/B000Y8BN0E/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/payment-in-blood-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The career of playwright Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives and eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upon to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, grapple for both a motive and a murderer. Emotions run deep in this highly charged drama, for the list of suspects soon includes Britain's foremost actress, its most successful theatrical producer, and the woman Lynley loves. He and Havers must tread carefully through the complicated terrain of human relationships, while they work to solve a case rooted in the darkest corners of the past and the unexplored regions of the human heart.

The Cat Who Knew Shakespeare is the seventh in the Cat Who series by Lilian Jackson Braun. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Cat-Who-Knew-...dp/B01BS7N7IA/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...-shakespeare-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
In this installment of the New York Times bestselling The Cat Who... series, there’s something rotten in the small town of Pickax—at least to the sensitive noses of newspaperman Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum.

An accident has claimed the life of the local paper’s eccentric publisher, but to Qwilleran and his feline friends it smells like murder. They soon sniff out a shocking secret, but Koko’s snooping into an unusual edition of Shakespeare may prove CATastrophic... because somewhere in Pickax, a lady loves not wisely but too well, a widow is scandalously merry, and a stranger has a lean and hungry look. The stage is set for Qwilleran, Koko, Yum Yum, and the second act of murder most meow...

Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor is the first in the Jane Austen series by Stephanie Barron. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Jane-Unpleasa...dp/B001QAP38W/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/jan...cargrave-manor

Spoiler:
Quote:
For everyone who loves Jane Austen...a marvelously entertaining new series that turns the incomparable author into an extraordinary sleuth!

On a visit to the estate of her friend, the young and beautiful Isobel Payne, Countess of Scargrave, Jane bears witness to a tragedy. Isobel's husband—a gentleman of mature years—is felled by a mysterious and agonizing ailment. The Earl's death seems a cruel blow of fate for the newly married Isobel. Yet the bereaved widow soon finds that it's only the beginning of her misfortune...as she receives a sinister missive accusing her and the Earl's nephew of adultery—and murder. Desperately afraid that the letter will expose her to the worst sort of scandal, Isobel begs Jane for help. And Jane finds herself embroiled in a perilous investigation that will soon have her following a trail of clues that leads all the way to Newgate Prison and the House of Lords—a trail that may well place Jane's own person in the gravest jeopardy.

The first eight novels in Chris Carter's Robert Hunter series are currently 99p each in the UK.

The Hunter is only a short story, so watch out for that one.

Since opinions were asked, I thought the Sookie Stackhouse series was a lot of fun. Not heavy; very light (well, people did die, but the *mood* is light). Can't hurt to try the first one and see if you like it!

I haven't seen the TV show, but I think the books are quite a bit different.

Yes the books are much different (and better) than the tv series.

Since I was the original asker - thank you all for the additional info. I bought both omnibuses (Sookie Stackhouse and Harper Connelly) and will give them a try - the price was certainly right

And three more Frank Kane titles have dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Links below now pull up the new sale titles, as well as Bullet Proof, which has not gone back up yet at Kindle US:

Some more Robert Barnard price drops to $0.99, one to $1.99, and a bunch of the previous price drops seem to still be on sale. So the links below are still good, but pull up both the new and many of the old sale titles.

As near as I can figure out with the help of eReaderIQ, the new price drops are:
  • The Killings on Jubilee Terrace
  • The Corpse at the Haworth Tandoori ($1.99)
  • Death in a Cold Climate
  • Unholy Dying
  • Death by Sheer Torture
  • Dying Flames

The new links include a stray or two, and one from last week, Political Suicide, is still on sale at Kindle, but has gone back up at Kobo.

New titles are:
  • Bad Samaritan (great title by the way - joins my all-time-titles list)
  • Death and the Chaste Apprentice ($1.99)
  • A Scandal in Belgravia
  • The Bones in the Attic
  • Out of the Blackout
  • Fete Fatale

And yet more, again, mostly at $0.99 and one at $1.99. I wonder why the occasionaly $1.99 title...if this is some sort of price elasticity of demand thing...

Anyway, newest titles are:
  • Death and the Princess
  • The Skeleton in the Grass
  • Bodies
  • A Fatal Attachment
  • Death of a Mystery Writer ($1.99)
  • The Case of the Missing Bronte
  • Corpse in a Gilded Cage
By now, if you like Robert Barnard, you should have been able to get a huge chunk of his backlist at very nice prices...

Links below are still good, and pull up lots of titles at the moment, slightly different selections at Kobo vs. Kindle, both older and recent price drops...

Run, don't walk...a rare omnibus that goes on sale in the US . P. D. James's Adam Dalgliesh Mysteries contains the first six titles in the series, and has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Even if you only need one or two titles, as I did, this is a good deal, since James' titles are usually ridiculously priced for backlist at $9.99 and up. Titles include:
  • Cover Her Face
  • A Mind to Murder
  • Unnatural Causes
  • Shroud for a Nightingale
  • The Black Tower
  • Death of an Expert Witness

If you in the US, not the UK, and don't travel often, you now have a second chance at some James Lee Burke/Dave Robicheaux titles in an omnibus in the US. Only three titles, but also only $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. Other box sets in the Robicheaux series go for $23.99 (!!!!) and up, for only two or three titles, so this is another "Run, don't walk" if you need these particular books. Titles include:
  • Jolie Blon's Bounce
  • Last Car to Elysian Fields
  • Crusader's Cross
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004PYDB0I/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-d...ok-boxed-set-2

Note: These titles are in the Robicheaux omnibus that was on sale in the UK not too long ago, so check carefully before you buy...

For those in the US, now $0.99 as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal, matched at Kobo. Careful - if you read this one, you'll get hooked on the series, and your TBR pile will explode - it's a looooong (but awesome) series .

A few random $0.99 titles (mostly probably left over from the S&S sale). Links are for Kindle US, mostly probably all at Kobo US too, but I'm running out of time, and don't have time to do both, so you'll have to search yourself at Kobo...
