Yesterday I finished Assassin's Quest, the third book Robin Hobb's Farseer Trilogy. An interesting and satisfying conclusion to the trilogy. Also nicely odd at times. I haven't run across that much when it comes to magic or to visiting the ruins of an ancient fantasy culture. Kept me reading as I wanted to know the explanations for what the characters were seeing. Not quite sure what I'll read next. I'll have to check prices before I spend my pennies.

There goes my planned reading for the next couple of days -- Nathan Lowell just released his latest, Home Run on Amazon. I'll circle back to The Secrets of Station X after I finish this.

Thank you! I just recently discovered this author and he's now one of my top favorites. I'd love any suggestions for books similar to his trader tales.

Somehow I ended up reading two books at once again. Finished Star Trek Savage Trade by Tony Daniel. Just an average Trek book, wasn't that great.

60% done with The Dry by Jane Harper. It's living up to it's title but there's enough there to keep me reading till the end.

Consider Sharon Lee & Steve Miller's Balance of Trade. This is a useful entry point into the Liaden Universe, and can be read completely standalone, though there is follow on book, Trade Secret.

Just finished The Last Mile by David Baldacci and it was a very good read. It was a police procedural; okay, okay an FBI procedural. And it had several plot changes I never anticipated

Sounds good! I have that whole series (bought on sale!) I really should get to it soon.

I’m getting back to some series I last visited about five years ago.

On the prose front, I’m about a quarter of the way through Kevin J. Anderson’s second “Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I.” novel, Unnatural Acts. Yes, I know KJA has a reputation as a hack in some circles, but I’m reading it for fun, not as high art - and it works for me on that level.

Thanks to a sale, I picked up the four (!) graphic novels I didn’t yet have in Adam Warren’s Empowered series: volumes 8-10 of the main line, plus an offshoot collection. The series continues to get deeper and more serious than what one would expect from the first book*, and for me that’s a very good thing. I’ve just started volume nine, and the story has been getting into big questions about the price of power and the dark side of superheroism. My one complaint is a small one: Emp’s supersuit used to start out pristine and get tattered over the course of a fight, but now it’s always ripped... even when there’s no apparent reason. Given that the suit has been established as regenerating over time (read: between stories), seeing her start the day in a torn suit irritates me a little.

* Book One is a collection of commissioned “heroine in bondage” vignettes. The artist preferred doing coherent stories over pinups, and over time, he built the world and heroine up enough to start telling solid stories about her. She remains lovably goofy at heart, but the stakes get higher and we get to see her mature in how she deals with them. So, be aware of that shift in tone.

Finished Home Run. Just as good as I expected, but I'd lost some threads from earlier and I can see I'm going to need to do some re-reading to figure things out.

Also finished The Secrets of Station X , a nominee for the August War Theme of the New Leaf Book Club. Fascinating reading, but sometimes a bit confusing and a bit too much of "he did this" and "she did that" and not enough of the how of cypher breaking. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars, or even 4. But I enjoyed the read, for sure.

Next up? Not sure. Still listening to the latest Maise Dobbs, but I'm going to need an eBook to read as well. Perhaps I'll just go ahead and drop back a couple of books in the Solar Clipper series.

Finished The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon for the New Leaf Book club this month. Fascinating story, really, but I'll reserve my comments for the big discussion starting on the fifteenth.

Now starting the sixth "Jack" Daniels book, Cherry Bomb. On the other hand, a new Richard Roberts "Don't Tell My Parents..." book has come into my possession, and I am eager to read it. On the Gripping Hand (virtual cookies to those who recognize the reference), I should read the previous books so that I am up to speed on this new novel.

I recommend the entire series of the Camel Club, since I consider them slightly better than the Last Mile.

I finally finished The Dry by Jane Harper. This book had so many good reviews, but I didn't like it that much. It wasn't much of a mystery and I wasn't too attached to the main character. Just finished it to finish it I guess.

I need something fun now, so I'm gonna go with Monster Hunter Legion by Larry Correia. It should hopefully get me out of my reading slump I'm on lately.

I didn't like it either. I gave it only two stars at Goodreads when I read it last year. It's hard to remember at this distance, but I think I liked the setting but found the mystery and its denouement pretty pedestrian.

I gave it 3 but that's a bit generous. That's my problem with it too and the bland characters.
