I've seen that Korean stuff before, on the ACDSee User's Forum site. It took them quite a while to get it under control. I wonder what the purpose of it is.

I've always held the view that its purpose is to irritate those who want to read real posts.

I am located in Germany and see this morning two instead of 10 pages with spam which is good.
What about the idea of filter for asian characters in the preference settings or moving such blogs into an own forum like «asian user».

It doesn't work anymore. Maybe putting more restrictions on new members. For example:

require a 5 minute wait after creating account to post
limit posting of first 10 posts to one per 5 minutes
prevent creation of more than 10 new threads for the first 24 hours

Suggestion number 3 could cause even more issues. If the spammers cannot create new threads, then maybe they'd tack their spam onto existing threads and that would make it a lot harder to deal with as the spam won't be seen until people go into seemingly spam free threads. I have a suggestion that might help if it could be implemented. When a user is banned, an option to delete all posts and all threads started by this user. That way, all the spam threads would go at once for each username.

Agree, that attaching to legit threads would be harder to get rid of. Automatically deleting all posts when user is banned is a bad idea, IMO. You would not want to get rid of possible legit and helpful posts. Having an optional admin tool to delete all posts and or started threads for a user is probably already there.

IMHO, the easiest solution would be to check the language of posts. AFAIK, vBulletin can be customized with PHP libraries and since there are a couple of ready-made language detection PHP libraries, e.g. language-detection, it should be relatively easy to implement a filter that'll reject posts by new members that aren't in French, German, English or Spanish.

It should also be able to detect Korean characters with one of the following regular expressions:

p{Hangul}

I was not suggesting all posts be deleted when a user is banned. But have an option to do so when a user is banned. So a user can be banned but posts left or can be banned and all posts removed wen banned.
