I know he divides opinion straight down the middle but I thought Linden Avery in Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant novels was a very strong and well-written character

Jusith Merkle Riley's female characters. They're fun, have a curious and facinating mix of naivety and intellingence, and are spirited.

modesty blaise!

not the horrible movie interpretations, but the graphic novels (from the long-running comic strip) and the novels and short stories.

not talking about the last 10 years work particularly where she's been sort of stuck in this Foreigner universe, but the earlier 80's work when she won 3 Hugos. I'm thinking of Tripoint, Merchanter's Luck, The Pride of Chanur, Rimrunners and Cyteen.

Nah, her mother was a whack job.

I like Elizabeth Bennett for her strength and her ability to stand up for herself and her family.

Too good to be true? Well, she is a fictional character after all.

I enjoy strong paranormal bent to my books, so my favourite authors who write female leads are:
  • Laurel K. Hamilton "Anita Blake" vampire hunter
  • Carrie Vaughn "Kitty" a female werewolf
  • Kelley Armstrong "Women of the Otherworld" series, various female lead characters

I really enjoyed Kelley Armstrong's novels, but I never could understand the popularity of Laurel K Hamilton. It really does baffle me, after about five books in they're nothing but terribly written erotica. Anita Blake spends more time in bed than hunting vampires.

Love all of these. I think Ruth in "Ammie" is my favorite character in all of Barbara Michaels' books.

Another female character I can't get enough of is Kate Shugak, Dana Stabenow's creation. She is tough, and somewhat masculine, but she's definitely female. Considering the books are set in the Alaskan Bush, that toughness would be necessary for survival.

Strong females

I just got Promises In Death by J.D. Robb (Nora Robert's pseudonym). It's amurder mystery and the lead character is Leutienant Eve Dallas. She never met an a$$ she couldn't kick! She is not perfect, but she loves her chocolate as much as she likes catching murderers. She wishes she could be more femenine, but she can't see a reason for it, so forget it.

I personally find her a good representation on how I think the women were in those times (especially the married kind with kids). But I agree with you on Elisabeth, she's a much stronger character. Maybe that is how the women in those time would like to see themselves?
