This series seems to have started at St. Martin's for the first 4, jumped to Soho for 5 (this title) and 6, then returned to St. Martin's for the rest (with 10 due out next year). Presumably, Soho decided to call it book 1.

Still Life is the first in the insanely outrageously nominated/awarded (like, every book has at least one nomination or award, and most have multiples) Chief Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

Spoiler:
Quote:
The CWA Dagger-winning first novel from worldwide phenomenon and number one New York Times bestseller Louise Penny, introducing Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.

The discovery of a dead body in the woods on Thanksgiving Weekend brings Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues from the Surete du Quebec to a small village in the Eastern Townships. Gamache cannot understand why anyone would want to deliberately kill well-loved artist Jane Neal, especially any of the residents of Three Pines - a place so free from crime it doesn't even have its own police force.

But Gamache knows that evil is lurking somewhere behind the white picket fences and that, if he watches closely enough, Three Pines will start to give up its dark secrets...

Well, here's one that's a little better...

Trouble in Triplicate is the 14th in the Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin series by Rex Stout. It has dropped to £1.49 at Kindle UK, but has also dropped to $2.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, which is a bit more, but still not bad, especially for the Wolfe/Goodwin series, which doesn't go on sale much in the US...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Trouble-Tripl...dp/B003L1ZWRG/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/trouble-in-triplicate
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Trouble-Tri...dp/B003L1ZWRG/

They all thought they were about to die . . . and they were right. Dazy Perrit was an underworld kingpin until a hail of bullets sent him into early retirement. Ben Jensen was a well-connected publisher until a determined gunman severed all his connections. Eugene R. Poor made novelties like exploding cigars until one of them blew him to kingdom come. Only the gourmet sleuth, Nero Wolfe, and his sidekick, Archie Goodwin, can solve the deadly equation of murder times three.

Another Edward Marston title for £1.90 at Kindle UK - The Circus Train Conspiracy is the most recent (2017) in Marston's Railway Detective series.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Circus-Trai...dp/B06XXVTSD3/

Spoiler:
Quote:
1860. Following a string of successful performances, the Moscardi Circus is travelling by train to Newcastle for their next show. Amongst the usual railway hubbub the animals have been loaded, the clowns, now incognito, are aboard and Mauro Moscardi himself is comfortable in a first-class compartment with a cigar. Yet a collision on the track with a couple of sleepers causes pandemonium: passengers are thrown about, animals escape into the night and the future of the circus looks uncertain.

When the body of a woman is discovered in woodland next to the derailment, Inspector Colbeck is despatched to lend assistance, believing the two incidents might be connected. It is up to Colbeck to put the pieces together to discover the identity of the nameless woman and unmask who is targeting Moscardi’s Magnificent Circus.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is the multi-award nominated/winning first title in the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US, possibly for today only since it is part of the US Kindle Daily Deal.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Sweetness-Bot...dp/B0027G6XDS/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...m-of-the-pie-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
BONUS: This edition contains a The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie discussion guide and an excerpt from Alan Bradley's The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag.

It is the summer of 1950–and at the once-grand mansion of Buckshaw, young Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison, is intrigued by a series of inexplicable events: A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Then, hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath.

For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life.”

The Marathon Conspiracy is the fourth in the Nicolaos/Athenian series by Gary Corby. It has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US (coupon/VIPable). I've read and enjoyed a couple of titles in this series, and they are mostly a hefty $8 and up (in the US, at least), so if you think you might want it, grab it...

Set in classical Athens, this “fast-paced, enjoyable, murder mystery . . . will make readers laugh and think in equal measure” (The Sydney Morning Herald).

Nicolaos, ancient Athens’s favorite sleuth, and his partner in investigation, the clever priestess Diotima, have taken time off to come home and get married. But hoping to get hitched without a hitch proves overly optimistic: A skull discovered in a cave near the Sanctuary of Artemis, the ancient world’s most famous school for girls, is revealed to be the remains of the Hippias, the reviled last tyrant to rule Athens.

The Athenians fought the Battle of Marathon to keep this man out of power; he was supposed to have died thirty years ago, in faraway Persia. What are his remains doing outside the city walls? Nico’s boss, the great Athenian statesman Pericles, wants answers, and he orders Nico to find them. Worst of all, one of the two Sanctuary students who discovered the skull has been killed, and the other is missing. Can the sleuths solve the interlocked crimes before their wedding?

I'm not organized enough with this series to know which ones I still need without checking individually , but I did need this one. I have noticed that individual Marston titles have been dropping to £1.90 at a rate of one or two every few weeks for a while, mostly in Marston's Nicholas Bracewell series, but a few others too. I haven't spotted any particular logic to it, but am happy to see the drops. Maybe they are trying to do a little time-limited price discrimination to grab money from those of us who are patient...

There is an omnibus of the first three titles in this series for £0.99 at Kindle UK right now. It's not called Death in Sicily, but rather is called (more descriptively) Inspector Montalbano: The first three novels in the series. Presumably a different publisher/reissue. In any case, IMO a great series, and great way to give it a try if you haven't already. Titles are: The Shape of Water, The Terracotta Dog and The Snack Thief.

Quote:
Author of The Bishop’s Wife: A Utah housewife looks into the murder of a prominent Mormon—with a surprising secret—in this “fast-moving” novel (Anne Perry).

In Draper, Utah, a tight-knit Latter-day Saints community is thrown into upheaval when their ward’s second counselor—one of the bishop’s right-hand men—is found dead in an elaborately staged murder on church property. Carl Ashby was known as a devout Mormon, a pillar of the community, and a loving husband and father. Who would want him dead?

Linda Wallheim, the wife of the bishop, can’t rest as long as the ward is suffering. She is particularly worried about Carl’s grieving family. But the entire case is turned upside down by the autopsy report—which reveals that Carl was biologically female.

In the Mormon church, where gender is considered part of a person’s soul, some people regard transgenderism as one of the worst possible sins. Church officials seem to be more upset by Carl’s gender than his murder, and more concerned with hushing up the story than solving the crime. Linda realizes that if the police are to catch the killer, they’re going to need an ally on the inside. Carl was living a life of secrecy for twenty years. What else was he hiding—and can Linda ferret out the key to his death before the rumors tear her community apart?

From the author of The Bishop’s Wife, this is both a compelling crime novel and “a heartfelt story that opens outsiders to a fascinating world” (The Boston Globe).
