Started Microcosmia by Ron Sanders last night.
Microcosmia Microcosmia pursues offbeat protagonist Cristian Vane, an emotionally troubled young liberal who’s just come into the staggering Vane fortune. With his newfound wealth and responsibility, Vane sets out to put his cosseted life back together, but a series of gut-wrenching misadventures in the real world produce a complete nervous breakdown. The young heir surfaces with a fresh perspective: wealth is wasted on the wealthy; his bequest is a golden opportunity to do something magnificent in a heartless world. Sickened by a documentary featuring scammed Ethiopian famine victims, he sets off for Africa to build his utopia. Though Vane’s misplaced magnanimity results in East-West friction and internal rivalries, he still manages to create his magnum opus, even as cutthroat pirates, a vile Eritrean colonel, and a doomed affair with a gorgeous, control-freak journalist push him over the edge. The tale concludes with an overwhelming assault by the Eritrean Army during the mother of all desert locust plagues. |

Finished the Sherlock Holmes Omnibus.
(phew, this is a lot of reading. I started back in November with HOTB for the book club, then continued on to finish them all.) There are nine books in the collection. 4 are full length books, of which two are very similar, The Sign of the Four and The Valley of Fear. The Hound of the Baskervilles was certainly the best of the lot. It also seemed to be that the stories in The Case-Book were very weak. Conan Doyle's forward seemed to point to the fact that he was writing this more to appease his fans than anything else. The short stories seemed to vary in quality to me. Some were very good, some seemed contrived. The themes got very popular too. The main issue I have with all of the stories were that some information is hidden from the reader. Also, many of the solutions are due to Holmes knowing the criminal from his description due to other cases (not published) that he worked on. The makes it hard for the reader to try to solve the mystery. Then again, there were a few that I knew exactally the answer... mostly from learning the forumla the Conan Doyle used. ---- Started Free Range Chickens.. a humor book just to take a break. So far, Meh. A few chuckles so far but not riproaring funny. Also, some seem quite contrived. BOb |

Yes, and not nearly as good as Spin. I would rate Spin as 4/5 and Axis 3/5.
I just finished Way Station (by Clifford D. Simak), it is average. I nearly gave up on it halfway through. 2.5 / 5. Started Refuge after that and gave up very soon. Started on Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist |

Just finished Free Range Chickens...
As I said before... Meh. I got a few chuckles, but alot of it was just a bit lame. Guess my sense of humor doesn't jibe with his. What to read next... hmm... so many possibilities. BOb |

just finished Path Between the Seas. A story of the building of the Panama Canal was not really what I expected, too much emphasis on the politics and medical problems and very little on the actual building of the canal

Having finished Sherlock Homes and Free Range Chickens I needed something to read.
So, I went through the 3 pages (EEEK!) of books on my Kindle and saw "Murder List" on there. It sounded interesting so I started it. Prolouge was pretty good, but I'm sure the books not about a 6yo girl. I think this was a freebee by a MR author. I don't know who. I will come back with thoughts after I finish it. Still listening to The Curse of Challion by Bujold. A third of the way in and not alot has happended. Granted it is a trilogy. It's not boring but I haven't yet seen what the main plot story is yet. Bob, we have the same tastes. I started Free Range Chickens, stopped when it became apparent that the book just sort of made me feel stupid for not being so sarcastically cynical.
Started Murder List, but stopped. However, I kept it on the reader, which is something I never do. I like a nice tidy couple of books on there, and delete them as I finish them. Right now, I'm going to begin reading Legends II, edited by Robert Silverberg. Probably of my all time favorite books was Legends, so I'm certain this will be good also. They are an anthology of short stories/novellas from some of the superstars of scifi/fantasy, written as stand-alones in the worlds of some of their best series. For instance, in Legends, Stephen King wrote on about happenings in his "Green Mile" world. Pratchett wrote a rolling around laughing story about Granny Weatherwax. I'm shutting down the computer now to begin reading! |

FYI everyone, if you want to see what everyone else is reading, check out our group at GoodReads! The link is in my signature. If you haven't been to GoodReads before, it's an extremely awesome website, particularly for cataloguing books you've read or want to read. |

Anyway... I did read all of Free Range Chicken. It is a very quick read. I figured there would be a few good things in it. The Dracula stuff just went on too long. But, the dad reads my diary was pretty funny. I'm only on Chap 1 of Murder List... so I'll give it some more time. I've still got Jeffrey Carver's stuff on my Kindle, a few TOR freebees I didn't read yet, Oliver Twist and UR. UR just keeps calling to me... I don't know why. BOb |

Dreams,
Thanks for checking out The Time Cavern. Getting on the sony store has been more challenging for me than I expected - I'll let you know when I get there. Regardless, I appreciate the interest! Also, great idea re: putting the book cover on my posts. I'll have to upload to my profile - thanks! |
