Thanks for the popup window clarification. I only use kepubs and I really like the presentation in a separate popup window,

There are a lot of books that have been published with the included annotations as the chief reason for the new edition. These books typically have the word "annotated" included in the title. I am a big fan of annotated books and, in general, the term annotation is more generally used as a critical or explanatory commentary. So I guess it would be a sub-category of footnote.

Using something I wrote instead avoids any copyright issues. Besides, there's always the chance someone might find the first page interesting enough to Google the text to read the rest.

If those are your texts, helpful hint: Justify the text. I was wondering what ebook you bought that had such bad formatting. (Don't mean to be a jerk, but it did make me wonder, as I was looking at the images.)

I always read left-justified, as I can't stand the huge gaps between words you get with full justification on the font size I use on a screen that small. Back before e-reader supported turning justification off, I recompiled every EPUB I got to turn it off.

Hate full justification. Hate hate hate it.

I suppose I probably have taken a screenshot of something fully justified anyway for the review, though...

I'd disagree. I like reading ragged right since that prevents lines that have massive spaces between words which annoy the hell out of me. The nice thing with most ereaders is that we get to choose.

The option to choose is good. In a review, images with test justification tend to look better. Paper books are justified and I think seeing non-justified text in the screenshots makes it look like the device does a poor job of rendering.

Before I bought an e-reader, if I saw a screenshot full of left-aligned text, I would think e-readers have a long way to go before they can replace books.

Just my $0.02. Take it for what it is worth.

I agree 100%. If I were interested in buying an ereader and had no prior knowledge, and if I were reading that review considering a Kobo, I'd think left alignment was an ereader/Kobo thing and not buy a Kobo.

It might be an idea to add a comment in the caption explaining the text alignment/justification settings...

...and if I saw a review with a reader that had large spaces between the words I would have probably never bought one either.

Shame no. buttons. Voyage location buttons on both side would be perfect. I guess I might get the 6" Onyx one day.

I hear what you're saying, but I think the large spaces between words are few and far between. I won't say I never see them, but they are the exception rather than the rule. I could open my current justified book to any random page and not see any examples.

To prove my point, look for any image from a review of any e-ink reader. Odds are that the text will be justified and there won't be those large gaps between words.

How often the large spaces happen is largely dependent on the size of the font you are using, and the size of your screen. I use a pretty large font size, and so if the text is justified I generally see large spaces at least every few pages, and in some books it's every page when using a 6 inch reader.

But then of course, we were talking about text used in screenshots for review purposes.

Hey, you do you, boo. But when reviewing a device and posting screenshots for the review, I think justified text makes the device look better than ragged right text (for the reasons I already mentioned). That's my only point.
