I really enjoyed 84K (for the most part). But then I've liked most of what I've read by the entity known as Webb/Griffin/North.

Have you read Mirror Dreams? I am quite curious (what with it having been written when she was 14), but I cannot see any ebook editions available.

It took a while for me to get into it, but on the whole, I like Cornwell's take on Arthurian Britain. I shall enjoy the other two books in the trilogy, but not just yet. Not sure what'll be next... |

I'm currently reading Luminescent Threads, which just won the Locus award for nonfiction (and is Hugo nominated). It contains a bunch of love letters from different writers addressed to Octavia Butler. It definitely makes me want to go back and read more of her books. (so far I've only read Kindred, the Parable duology, Wild Seed, Fledgling, and some of Bloodchild.)

I'm reading The Thin Light of Freedom by Edward L. Ayers. I was waiting 15 years for the follow-up to In the Presence of Mine Enemies: War in the Heart of America, 1859-1863.

Why, oh why, did I decide to listen to the audiobook of Mischling while working today? It's very good but I may have to curl up in the fetal position for a month.

I've started reading A Red Herring without Mustard, the third of the Flavia de Luce books from Alan Bradley. I had started this series quite a while ago, and somehow got off it, but I'm going back for another try. I _do_ like the bits of real science interspersed in them. Though I'm not convinced that an 11 year old, female protagonist is being accurately portrayed by an adult male author.

Hi!
I'm currently reading the Bonecollector by Jeffery Deaver. It's one of the top crime novels I have ever read. The language is also pretty understandable for non-native English speakers. |

Finished Dark Alchemy by Laura Bickle.
There was much to like about Dark Alchemy. Some elements I felt were original and engaging. The writing was precise with just the right amount of description. However, I thought the author didn't use her ideas to their full potential like the Native American angle. That along with a few inconsistencies and an unsatisfying conclusion brings my rating to two stars [C-]. This was a free book direct from Harper Voyager. Next, a new author for me, Harry Connolly's Child of Fire. |

Just finished The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri and it was a very good mystery. Got it based on a reco on thiis site and looks like I’ll have to get the rest.
Meanwhile, next up is Ballistic by Mark Greaney which is the third in the Gray Man series. Last edited by MickeyC; 07-01-2018 at 12:23 PM. |

Most of the books I see people reading here I have never heard of. It would be nice if people would also post the genre (or a one/two sentence description) of the type of book it is. So others can see if that might interest them, and then go look into it further.
I'm reading Matthew Reilly's "Temple". I would label this as Action/Adventure from what I know about it (just started it, so not very far along). As best I can tell, it's about a govt/military/science group heading into the depths of Peru to find an Incan artifact that a competing group of bad guys is also after. I expect lots of action, shooting, etc. just based on other Matthew Reilly books I've read. Last edited by haertig; 06-30-2018 at 06:39 PM. |
