I understand what you are saying - but here is my issue. I have over 200 books. Let's say I buy a book that I don't intend to read until I am done with the couple of books I am reading right now. If I delete it off my Kindle until I am ready to read it, then I have to page through all my books in the archived items folder to find it and re-download it when I am ready to read it. Even if I had one folder on the Kindle I could use to store books that I intend to read - but that would not clutter up my home screen list - that would make a BIG difference for me in staying organized.

People are reading DRM free books bought at other places than Amazon and people travel to other countries and might not always have a computer with net connection available.

Different strokes ...

Alas, I'm not that organized. I don't always have a new book waiting in the wings. Furthermore, I'm a book junkie ... I have to have something available to read. When I'm done with a book I look over my 500 book library and look for something interesting to re-read.

I have my entire library with me. Even if I'm in line at the Motor Vehicle office, and I can pick anything that interests me at the time.

It doesn't matter that your don't understand. What works for you, great.

I know they are stored on Amazon, and yes, they are all already on my computer.

Its like carrying my library where-ever I go.......my books are there, to look at, and I can read what I want when I want.

Your Kindle is clutter free......mine is filled with great books.

One. But I like to select it from among a wide variety of new and old titles...and I may be on the road for some time, and most of my books aren't from Amazon...

I also only listen to one song at once, but I like my mp3 player to be able to hold a large collection of music.

Mine isn't "filled" with great books... but with access to the Amazon store, mobileread and feedbooks I can "choose" any of probably 500,000 books at any time and be reading it within minutes.

Also, I can set up my own library on my PC or WEB server with folders and any oganization scheme I want. With my Kindle I can browse that repository and d/l whatever my heart or head wants.

This is one of the great advantages of the Kindle over other devices that are limited to a measly 2000 books. THIS is the advantage of Whispernet.

Thanks for the tip. I had not tried that.

After experimenting, I see that you don't need to go to the top. Anything you type brings up a search box. If you just type one letter it takes you to that letter in the listings.

So if Titles are active and you type d then enter it brings you to the d titles. If you type more than one letter "dog" it does a full text search on dog.

I have quite a few books I've already read on my Kindle since I often think back to something I have read and want to see that passage again. I also have a few reference books, RFCs and dozens of my recipes. The search function helps me find things in all of this but I would still like to organize it so I could browse more easily. If I only kept upcoming books I wanted to read, that certainly would be easier, but I think one of the main goals Bezos and his team had for the Kindle was to go beyond the limits of the book. I think this would be a pretty simple improvement that would make the Kindle an even more useful tool.

Maybe I'm on the more an*l side of organization but even without 65+ pages of content I would like to see folders. Especially for series, I have a habit of finding an author I like and grabbing all of their books at once. It would be great to be able to organize the books into the different series. I often start reading what I think is the next book only to find completely different characters

It would also be nice to be able to have them ordered themselves by their place in the series rather than by title or the date you bought them.

I used to do the same thing, buying everything from an author I liked. I don't do that with the Kindle. I just get the samples then I get the actual book if I finish the sample and still like it.

I soooo wanted the kindle. What killed the deal for me was having neither folders or an sd for organization.

I understand that some people don't "understand" uses other than their own, but people don't all use a device in the same way. My reader is for personal and homeschooling use. I need to be able to sort through my personal reading (including scriptures which can be a bear to navigate without dividing) and I also load church magazines and articles and things which I need to be organized.

I am homeschooling two children, and they need their books divided so they can easily find them, and quickly flip between different titles. If they are reading a history lesson, and need to further research something in another resource, we aren't going to want to hunt for everything... it needs to be easy to access, and we need to keep lots of titles available at the same time.

OK... lets take a breath here and not start insulting people.

---

Personally I certainly "understand" wanting folder and/or tags. Heck, I want them too. What I don't understand is feeling this is a show stopper. That said, there are other devices that do support folders... so if Kindle isn't for you... I'm ok with that.

Also, disagreement doesn't equate to lack of understanding. There are just some things that people don't agree on. That's fine to. As Mr. Spock says, infinite diversity in infinite combination (IDIC) is what makes the community stronger.

Not sure about the Kindle 1, but on my Kindle 2, I can do a "search my items" on the device itself and Archived Items. Search for a book title or author etc etc...

Makes folders irrelevant to me.

If you go over to Amazon Kindle forums and read through the threads there, you will find that the vast majority indeed DO want folders and complain long and loudly about the fact they are missing. It is not a minority issue. It is also one of the biggest complaints that you find in a Google search about Kindle cons.

I returned my Kindle 2 today, 6 hours after getting it, because I found that it does not give me the ability to sort and file my content the way I want to. I agree that having 1500 MB of space is pointless when I have to thumb through 10 pages of books to find a specific title in the "A" section. I can't separate my fiction from non-fiction, or my history from my philosophy.

Using folders to organize content has been the staple of every computer system since DOS was invented. That it is missing from the Kindle 2 is mind-boggling stupid, in my opinion.

I'll have to stick with my PRS-505 until that user created folder option is available....
