Yeah, there are a lot of bitwise things they can do to the data, from the trivial to the complex. I'm content to leave figuring it out to the younger, single geeks with more free time.
I'm just happy that I don't have a large library of stuff I hadn't gotten around to downloading from Kobo, because I just redownloaded a Kobo audiobook that had been usable mp3s when I downloaded it last, and it's now downloading as the unusable enc2 files.

I also purchased a SD card to exand the memory of my kindle fire which has Google Play on it. However, everything dowloaded from it goes directly to the internal memory. I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon did this deliberately to force consumers to purchase from the Amazon app store which downloads to the SD card when set.

That's an odd way of looking at it, since Amazon never claimed to support Google Play on the Fire in the first place.

Thanks. Very helpful information . . . . potentially saved me a lot of $$$ buying a high-capacity memory card.

I suppose that someone could leave enough internal memory free in order to add a book, and then transfer the book file to the card once it's been downloaded? Or would the app not "know" to check there? If someone had to leave the file in internal memory, in order to listen to it, could the person transfer the file to the card (or to a desktop's hd, or wherever) once he/she was through listening to it?

Audible's storage of audiobooks in the cloud seems much more convenient. I am struggling to find enough incentive, so far, to buy anything from Kobo (B&N's basically been out of the picture for quite some time).

Just like with Audible, Kobo stores your stuff in 'the cloud.' Downloading is optional, for both companies.

I haven't messed with it, but unless the app specifically lets you configure it to store and use the audio books on the SD card (which I don't think it does), or unless you configure the SD as an extension of the phone's internal memory, which I believe is an option in the newer versions of Android on many devices, then no, you can't play Kobo audio books from the SD card.

You may be able to manually move them to the SD, card then manually move them back to the internal location to use them.

FYI, Audible downloads DO go to the SD card.

They can go to the SD card. It's a setting you can change through the app. Now if only the Audible programmers would get demoted to the Kindle app...

Really? I didn't think I ever did anything to change the default on my smartphone.

I know the Hoopla app lets you change settings to download borrowed books to the card, but it won't work for me--if it's not set to download to internal memory I get an error message.

Yup, but as I said, when it's set to download to the card, I get an error message and can't download. So I change it back to internal memory as the destination, and the book downloads. Weird, but it's the same thing no matter how many times I've tried.

Hmmm... Could be a card problem. Also, if you have a card that you've told Android to treat as internal memory (an option when you install the card) that might override the app settings and cause the error. That's not how I use my card so I can't be sure.
