This certainly sounds like different files for your two Kindles.

Yes, DRM free MOBI files work on all Kindles, it is Amazon's DRMed ebook files that are definitely tied to particular Kindles (and are either tied to one Kindle, or perhaps multiple Kindles, per file).

But in my media library I have three options for a book - download to my Kindle, to my wife's Kindle, or to my computer. If I chose to download to my computer, which Kindle does it make the file compatible with?

When my Kindle arrives next week I'll download a book to the computer and then transfer that file to both Kindles and see what happens. Unless someone with two Kindle 1's wants to try that now and let us know...

Also - I have been backing up my books to my computer before I purchased the second Kindle. We'll see if any of those work on my Kindle 2, or whether I'm going to have to re-download all those books. What a pain that would be!!!

If the Kindle eBook is in azw format, then you can remove the DRM. Once the DRM is gone, what you have left is a DRM free Mobipocket format eBook. Search around MR to see about MobiDeDRM.py.

Also read the following wiki entry... https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/KindlePID_XP. It will help you get the scripts needed to get your Kindle's PID needed to strip the DRM.

If you have multiple Kindles on your account, when you choose "Download to computer" you will then be prompted to select a Kindle that you want to transfer (using usb) that file to. That prompt doesn't appear if you only have 1 Kindle registered.

As folks have already said, each Kindle requires a new encryption (or DRM-free )

Well - I hate to admit being wrong - but it looks like I am! You do need to indicate which Kindle the file will be for if you download to the computer.

That means downloading EVERY one of the 100+ books I have purchased over the last year (I read a lot) if I want backup copies for my new Kindle 2. ARRRGH!

Have you tried calling Kindle support to see if there is an easier way?
Just a thought.

Maybe copy them from the Kindle 2 itself - might be easier if it's set to automatically download all your ebooks.

Well, since the Kindle 2 DOES have a mini-USB connector for charging or connecting to a computer, it would just be a matter of a firmware update for them to allow you to use a connected volume as an extension of it's built in memory...so it IS possible.

Until then or unless, you can simply move files back and forth from your computer if you end up short on space. Not a bad solution, really, and I do believe that relying on internal memory only does allow for faster operation in page switching, etc.

I believe that the Amazon encryption works like the MobiPocket in that the .azw file will be encrypted for all Kindles registered to the account. Right now if I purchase an encrypted MobiPocket book from Fictionwise it comes with 3 different PIDs that I registered with Fictionwise encrypted into the file. If I run MobiDeDrm on that file using any of the three PIDs, the program works.

Amazon asking which Kindle to download the ebook to is purely convenience. It can be download to either or all it just takes separate clicks at Amazon to make it so.

Then again I may be wrong since when you download to the PC Amazon asks which Kindle it is for. I will run a couple tests and report back....

I was wrong, the ebook is encrypted with only one PID so the encryption scheme isn't identical to MobiPocket.

That's not the case. Each Kindle book is only encrypted with 1 PID, the one for the Kindle you d/l it to. You can't move the book from one Kindle to the other.

Also, when you d/l to the PC, if you have more than 1 Kindle registered it asks you which Kindle you want the file for.

If you read the rest of my post I figured out that only one PID is encrypted into each Amazon ebook.
