Two non-series titles by Deanna Raybourn are also part of the Kobo 60% off Mother's Day sale (use code MOM18 until May 14). These look as if they sit sort of between romance and mystery, but they look a little more romance-ish to me, so I'm putting them here. With that said, I've quite enjoyed Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey mystery series, which probably falls on the other side of the fence, so YMMV. Both titles are normally $5.99, so will be $2.40 after using the coupon as in the post above.

Quote:
A husband, a family, a comfortable life: Theodora Lestrange lives in terror of it all.

With a modest inheritance and the three gowns that comprise her entire wardrobe, Theodora leaves Edinburgh—and a disappointed suitor—far behind. She is bound for Rumania, where tales of vampires are still whispered, to visit an old friend and write the book that will bring her true independence.

She arrives at a magnificent, decaying castle in the Carpathians, replete with eccentric inhabitants: the ailing dowager; the troubled steward; her own fearful friend, Cosmina. But all are outstripped in dark glamour by the castle's master, Count Andrei Dragulescu.

Bewildering and bewitching in equal measure, the brooding nobleman ignites Theodora's imagination and awakens passions in her that she can neither deny nor conceal. His allure is superlative, his dominion over the superstitious town, absolute—Theodora may simply be one more person under his sway.

Before her sojourn is ended—or her novel completed—Theodora will have encountered things as strange and terrible as they are seductive. For obsession can prove fatal…and she is in danger of falling prey to more than desire.

Quote:
Return to a Jazz Age tale of grand adventure by New York Times bestselling author Deanna Raybourn

On the verge of a stilted life as an aristocrat’s wife, Poppy Hammond does the only sensible thing—she flees the chapel in her wedding gown. Assisted by the handsome curate who calls himself Sebastian Cantrip, she spirits away to her estranged father’s quiet country village, pursued by the family she left in uproar. But when the dust of her broken engagement settles and Sebastian disappears under mysterious circumstances, Poppy discovers there is more to her hero than it seems.

With only her feisty lady’s maid for company, Poppy secures employment and travels incognita—east across the seas, chasing a hunch and the whisper of clues. Danger abounds beneath the canopies of the silken city, and Poppy finds herself in the perilous sights of those who will stop at nothing to recover a fabled ancient treasure. Torn between allegiance to her kindly employer and a dashing, shadowy figure, Poppy will risk it all as she attempts to unravel a much larger plan—one that stretches to the very heart of the British government, and one that could endanger everything, and everyone, that she holds dear.

“Raybourn skillfully balances humor and earnest, deadly drama, creating well-drawn characters and a rich setting.” —Publishers Weekly on Dark Road to Darjeeling

Blossom, my sympathies also for your loss. I echo those who have said, "read something old and favorite" - when I'm sad, I want to easily lose myself in a story, and the old favorites work the best for me. Hopefully for you too...

I am so sorry Blossom for all you are going through.

Like others said, old favorites are good to go to when you need a lift.
There is a book I read by Tessa Dare "Romancing the Duke" I like to recommend to folks when they need something light and romantic. It made me smile all the way through. It was so romantic to me. Not sure if you read it already.

Thank you everyone today is harder I realized I no longer have anything to do but mourn. So I've been weeping at everything this morning. I keep seeing my sister's casket on that lonely pavilion as we walked away and left her.
They couldn't put her in the crypt till we left. I went back later and spent a few moments at the crypt. Next time I'll take her and my uncle something. They are in the same crypt together. It was originally for his wife but my uncle's widow has made other plans. My cousin gave us the spot for my sister.

I'll probably read something later today just to fill the empty hours now everything is done. I still have no clue what.

The Troubled Texan by Phyliss Miranda is the BN Readouts Friday (actually usually through the weekend) free book. Since I try really hard not to deal with BN anymore due to difficulties with downloading from their website, it's nice that their BN Readouts free titles are usually price matched at Kindle US, and often also at Kobo US. This one is is price-matched at both.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Troubled-Texa...dp/B00FH1IEBE/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-troubled-texan-1
BN: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the...=9781601831200

Spoiler:
Quote:
Small-town Texas isn't big enough for the both of them. . .or is it just right?

Sheriff Donovan "Deuce" Cowan has seen his share of trouble, but when he nearly hauls in Maressa Clarkson for speeding, he's suddenly in over his head. These days his long-lost high school classmate is calling herself Rainey Michaels and she sure hasn't come to Kasota Springs by accident. It seems the Los Angeles Deputy DA has chosen the West Texas town to hide out from a dangerous convict. It's all Deuce can do not to corral the sexy spitfire—in the name of keeping her safe, of course. Problem is, Rainey isn't letting anyone in on her big secret, least of all a hard-bodied, former pro-footballer sheriff with an overactive protective instinct. So now she's trying to keep him in line, one slow kiss at a time. . .

My wife is currently reading that book and enjoying it very much. Had to practically drag her out of the house for Mother's Day brunch with the kids.

I have not been a subscriber for many years and never attended one of their conventions, but I'm sad to see that this is the last year for the RT con and the website will be closed in less than a month. I never understood why they changed their names from Romantic Times to RT Magazine. There's nothing on their website yet. I saw the news on Social media.

When I first started reading romance I remember writing snail mail to the various bookstores with ads in the back of the magazine trying to track down authors' backlist books. (Yes I am pre-internet years of reading romance years old )

Apparently there will be a more reader-focused con next year in New Orleans under new management (and invite only for authors). bookloverscon.com

On sale for 99¢ The Widow by Carla Neggers (Boston Police / FBI #1)

Spoiler:
Four days after Abigail Browning’s wedding, her life changed unimaginably: her husband was fatally shot along the rocky Mount Desert Island coast. Was it a random act of violence, or could someone have wanted Christopher dead?

That’s the question that has haunted Abigail, now a homicide detective, for the past seven years. Determined to find her husband’s killer, she returns to the foggy Maine island after receiving an anonymous tip. Is it just another false lead, or can she finally prove that Chris was murdered?

Owen Garrison, the search-and-rescue worker who located Chris too late to save him, still carries guilt from that fateful night. As he helps Abigail unravel the mystery, they learn that the layers of deceit and lies are even thicker than they could have imagined. Now it’s up to Abigail and Owen to keep pushing for the truth—and stop a killer from striking again….

I really enjoyed this one. IIRC the books are only connected by the characters and each book features a different mystery, so this can be read as a stand-alone. (Though this h/h are also featured in books two and three of this four book series, but not as the main characters).

I dropped the subscription the moment they went totally online and there was no magazine. But it has been useful for me for many years when I was checking USA scene (remember, Spanish girl here).

And I received emails from them, as I still was in their mail list.

Sad to see them say goodbye.

It's the end of an era. It looks like Avon is making their own conference to pick up some of the slack. In addition to smaller KissCons one big one. It's to be held in Chicago with like 30 authors.

There are two other options available as well:

HRR2018 is in California in September.

RR2019 will also be in California in September next year, and will be followed by HRR2019.

If anyone does register for HRR2018, please enter my name (Meghan Edwards) as your referral. Thank you!
