Cover Thumbnails for AZW3 PDOCs possible since 5.8.5?

Thanks a lot for your answer! I need to sync the last page read between multiple devices so unfortunately sideloading is not an option for me. As I really like having covers for my books, I'm sticking to firmware 5.8.2 for the time being, but I feel I'm starting to lag behind now; I really wish there was a way to get those covers on the more recent versions of the OS!

Just an idea, is there any way to modify the CDE type of a book, directly on the kindle, after that book was dowloaded from the cloud? Would that trick the kindle into downloading the covers? I thought of using the Java mobi metadata editor but it only works on .mobi files; the book transferred from the cloud service is normally in AZW or AZW3 format.

Nope, there is nothing you can do to get both sync and cover for non-Kindle Store (azw3) books. That change was a calculated move by Amazon, since they made it so that editing CDE Type as a "post-download" step breaks syncing. After you edit the downloaded file Kindle will start displaying cover thumbnail but will no longer sync LPR (last page read).

Ok, thanks for your answer; I guess we can't have everything. Looks like I'll stay on 5.8.2 for a bit longer!

Why not note the location your at when you stop reading on one device and use the "go to" feature on the next device to begin at the same spot?
If your forgetful, you can e-mail the location to the next device where you can look it up.

Because I'm lazy I like to switch between my Kindle, my phone and my ipad depending on the situation, sometimes several times a day; I actually got the 3G model specifically for this. For me, the convenience of being able to immediately pick up where I left on any of those devices is worth more than the covers.
