Not to be a party pooper -- but I'm keeping the paper books that I haven't read yet, just incase the Y2K problem eventually happens and all our electronics break. Like - aren't they talking about an extra big solar {projection/wave/glitch/what's the word I'm looking for?} in 2012 or there abouts? Or, what if we run out of fuels and have to revert to <gasp> reading without a computer?

You'll all have to come visit me then - cuz I'll have the only paper books left on the planet!

i would LOVE to put a hammock in my living room, but they take up so much space ! plus, frankly, i wouldn't trust the walls to be solid enough to keep it from dropping me on the floor. *sigh* i think i'll add "hammock" to my list of criteria for my dream appartment...

Not very often in winter. But if civilisation looks as though it may collapse then I'll get a series of them and store that sunshine.

it's a good idea. i've been tempted to get one myself but i fear the parisian climate is not much sunnier than the british one. but i might give it a try nonetheless.

You know we're all pulling your leg there.

Your sense of fairplay does you justice.

A thought occured to me after I answered your question. When you buy software, you can make a safekeeping copy. When I want to put a CD on my iPod I make a copy, not for resale, for personal use. I keep my records. The iPod lets me listen to music in conditions my CDs won't let me.

Anything can happen to an electronic copy and be destroyed faster than the original book. So you could lend your books to someone with space... for safekeeping.

I give my books to an outfit here. They teach adults to read. The books we give are sold to pay for those classes. I saw some books there come back for the umpteenth time!

I'm a "moral conundrum"? I've not been called one of those before. Is that a compliment, a criticism, or an observation?

You need to read your Shelley again. Once you've unleashed your "hideous progeny"; set him ablaze with your Promethean fire; only the monster can unmake himself, and he's currently having too much fun.

I prefer "Marc I" (I'm near as fond of association with "Mark" as I am "Marcus", and my mind tends to subsequently boil like a cauldron full of snakes).

Sometimes I suspect Adrian is more real than me. I wonder if I may be his imaginary friend.

On-topic: I occasionally clear out my pbooks of all the chaff I've no intent of reading, referring to or recommending ever again. I've only just done it in the last week or so. These books will go down to the secondhand bookstore at the bottom of the hill, most likely, and I'll probably dump the cash in at one of the nearby charity shops.

I suspect I'll always maintain a pbook library. In fact, if ebook supply approaches infinity through ease of copying, I wonder if a well-bound, archival pbook may become one of the "scarce goods" for some authors and their fans.

Cheers,
Marc

I might clear a few of them, but I've been dreaming for years of having my own private library room so now that I have it, I will not empty it !
Well, at least not empy it of books, as there are a lot of boxes from our move into the appartment, and we have to clear them to be able to enjoy our very own library.

Finally! A like-minded person!

Ok, we must still make the room, but the idea is there and so is the space! It only needs some isolation, as it is cold enough to store the last years crop of apples right now...

I have a book dated from 1755. I opened it once. I will probably not read it because I'm afraid of bruising it. I'd probably have more fun building it a shrine anyway.
