What font are you using? The change that is most likely to slow things down when reading is the change for the font used for the "Publisher Default". This has changed to larger font that will probably take more memory. And as the Glo has very limited RAM, this could slow it down. The font was previously "Georgia". If you try that now, it might be better.
Thanks for this. I was using Amasis, I did change to Georgia and that made it pretty snappy for a while. But then it became very slow again, like 8s to turn a page.

From what I can tell it seems to happen as soon as I encounter a picture in a Pocket article (I haven't had a chance to start a new book since the new firmware, only reading Pocket articles). After an image is displayed, it becomes very slow.

If I go to another article, it's back to snappy, until I'm encountering an image again...

These are not especially large images, like 600x450 on the original article.

Nope. Only upgrades are automatic, not rollbacks.

Yes, Kobo probably do more testing on kepubs than epubs. I don't actually think that is an unreasonable thing for them. It is their format, they sell books in the format and they also have more control over the code for kepubs than for epubs. But, they do test epubs. And if you read the rest of the post you partly quoted, you will see that I am not seeing this problem on any of my devices. And I didn't see it during the beta cycle leading up to this release.

For those who have updated (e.g. me) and do not see any problem (I have only read kepubs ...), is it worth to roll back to previous FW?.

It seems strange that all new FW have been retired when only some models are declaring problems.

I have installed the patch for the fonts in epubs, and perhaps this is the reason why I have no problems... (yet).

I have been waiting for so long a new FW solving the stats issue that now I do not want to revert Syncing should be safe, or will it try to revert?

I upgraded my Glo HD to this FW and was happy with it EXCEPT it flashed twice at every 10 page turns! Just logged in to see that it has been pulled! I have rolled back to previous FW.

The short answer is, are you seeing problems? If not there is no reason to rollback. And the device won't download older firmware.

The longer answer...

We don't actually know why Kobo stopped rolling the firmware out. If the problem is the one being discussed, it probably does affect all devices, but the Glo and Touch are the ones it is most noticeable on. But, no matter what the problem is, pulling it from all devices makes sense until they know for sure. It is possible they will enable it again for some devices if they decide some aren't affected.

Thank you for your answer. Your suggestions are always welcome!.

My concern was about if the problem can for instance corrupt in the long term any database due to a lack of memory or something like this ...

As this is very unlikely, I will maintain this FW and will enjoy with the working stats

Last time they stopped rolling out a firmware, they came out with a new one very shortly after, like within a week or two. So if the issues are important, you won't be with the buggy firmware too long anyway.

Is it possible this firmware was pulled due to issues with ePub because of the change in the default fonts?

I’m playing sudoku on my Original Aura. I noticed they updated the game. Now you can play on the H2O too. The older Version wasn‘t really playable. So I‘m happy with the update.

I didn't say anything about being "unreasonable," I was just making a guess on how this bug got through testing without being noticed. The 4.8.x update definitely did screw up ePub reading on my Kobo Touch – and these errors were the same as described by several others here. I'm pretty sure it was a font issue, otherwise the patches I applied (a few of them dealing with fonts) wouldn't have fixed my Touch (which is now working fine with 4.8.x). Maybe specific fonts triggered the bug. I don't know enough to know why, I just know what was.

Do you remember which patches were applied for the fonts?

I think it definitely has something to do with fonts. I'm curious, has anyone documented what devices had the "blank page" ePub error? It seems like it was (mostly?) Touches and Glos.

Just a curiosity: does Kobo distributes this FW to those devices?

I didn't remember, but I've gone through the files and checked all that I opted to use (I don't think I missed any). I was pretty much "going in blind," so I don't know if my choices made a lot of sense or not. Here's the list (I think it's complete) of all the patches I enabled.

In the libnickel.so.1.0.0 patch:
Custom font sizes
Freedom to advanced fonts control
ePub disable built-in body padding-bottom
Fix three KePub fullScreenReading bugs
Force user line spacing in KePubs
Force user line spacing in ePubs (part 1 of 2)
Force user font-family in ePubs (Part 1 of 2)
ePub constant font sharpness
KePub constant font sharpness

In the librmsdk.so.1.0.0 patch:
Disable orphans/widows avoidance
Force user line spacing in ePubs (Part 2 of 2)
Force user font-family in ePubs (Part 2 of 2)

In the nickel patch:
Disable reading footer
