It might be worth looking into it. One of my Kobo Touches upgraded to the newest software and ePubs just didn't work. I ran the patches and one of them fixed it. I don't know which but there were a few that dealt with fonts and I'm guessing it was one of them. I liked the patch so much – no footer, no open space at the bottom of the page, ability to change weight of downloaded fonts, etc. – that I also patched the other Kobo Touch that I keep at release 3.19.x. I'll probably patch the Mini as well (I think a software patch is available for it also).

As i only read epubs, I don't have any benefit from the fast page turning feature.

A few question come to mind.

What firmware version were you using prior to the 4.8.10956 update?

What were your favourite fonts that disappeared when you installed the 4.8.10956 update?

What fonts no longer had the Advanced font controls option available after the update?

As for the publisher default fonts, those fonts were changed in what I consider to be a bad decision since the fonts used (Kobo Tsukushi Mincho and Kobo UD Kakugo) are large packages that do not support bold or italic and can cause slow operation on the Kobo Glo with it's limited memory. Perhaps, the firmware should check the locale and use those two fonts for Japan with the rest of the world getting Georgia/Avenir.

This exactly! I access the menu way more than changing the progress indicator. Would be nice to have the option to keep the long-press (patch possible anyone?).

I finally came around to updating my old H2O (the one that came out back in 2014) and I have to say I'm pleasantly surprised at how snappy it's become. I did factory reset it before applying the update, but I'd been doing it on and off in the past year because it was sluggish and it hadn't changed anything, so... is it just me?

Same here. When open Epub file screen is blank and percentage 100%.
I need to revert back.
It seems that also Kobo's website reverted back.
I hate losing my time in this way!

I updated the other night. I only have two epubs on my Kobo Aura H2O at the moment, both library loans. I haven't checked the second one yet, but the first opens and reads just fine. I'll check the second one when I get home tonight.

Kobo appears to have pulled this update for all devices. I have a copy of all the firmware zips (except for mark 7), but all the links except for the kobo7 ones work.

None of the affiliates I check seem to carry this firmware anymore.

You can find the links to this version by clicking the "Other Versions" button in my firmware downloader, or expanding the table at the bottom of my page.

I wonder why kobo did this, as this is my favourite release so far since 3.19.5761.

As for the mark7 zip, it would be nice if someone sent me a copy, or I could try and generate the zip (the only change is in the drivers directory, and I have a copy of it somewhere).

P.S. I really wish I wasn't so lazy about updating my firmware download cron script for kobo7 devices because now I don't have it just when it was pulled. I think luck plots against me sometimes....

Edit: The latest version for the Kobo Touches now shows as 4.6.9960, but the links for the newer versions still work (for now).

I just checked and the link I had for the mark 7 devices still works -- at least, the file that downloads has the mx6sll-ntx directory in the upgrades directory.

If you are going to make a statement like that, then consider how often Microsoft, Apple and all the other much larger global companies put out fixes. This is a general problem with software development. The complexity of the code quickly gets to a point where there knock-on effects of any change are unpredictable and hard to test for.

Taking this as an example, the suggestion is the cause is the change to a different font for the "Publisher Default". And based on what is happening, it makes sense. A much larger file being loaded in a memory constrained system could cause problems. But, testing this on all my devices, I haven't seen the problem that is being reported. That suggests it isn't as simple as "using wrong font". We don't really know what the problem is. We have something easy to blame, but it is likely that it is a combination of things that might not be as common as you think.

And please note, this isn't a defence of Kobo. This is a software developer reacting to the common to a statement that demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the complexities involved.

And for the tldr: Because it's f**king hard. And no-one wants to pay for it.

Do you know anything about why kobo pulled this release earlier today?

No. It's been asked on the beta list, but, the timing meant that there was probably no-one there to answer.

I've got a feeling that Kobo tests their upgrades using mostly KePubs, not so much with ePubs.

Since 4.8.x is working well on my Kobo Touch now I would just as soon that it stayed there. Kobo doesn't automatically "drop back" and "upgrade" with an older release of firmware in situations like these, do they?
