Just got the upgrade last night. I found another change in the firmware.

After side loading a few more books and ejecting, if I choose something on the home screen early, when the kobo decides to scan the new side loaded books, it use to dump you back on the home screen. Now it leaves you where you were. Yea!

What about bold & italic on "Publisher Default" font on ePub books via USB & Calibre (the only way I load books)?

What about Publisher included fonts (via Calibre embed Fonts etc)?

This will be the same for all the devices. The differences between the upgrade packages are only in the device specific stuff such as drivers and the kernel. And the way nickel operates is identical except for the device specific stuff (resolution, the different lights).

I've updated my GLO (not HD) with update 4.8.10956, quickly flip (the new fast page turning feature) tested with a kepub : it doesn't work...

I'm alone with this bug on a Glo?

I have deleted this update and went back to the previous firmware ( I have the kobo H20 1st gen). The ghosting was back and my fav. fonts where dissapeared and other fonts I couldn't adjust anymore . Also the default fonts where "off" (much lighter)
As i only read epubs, I don't have any benefit from the fast page turning feature.

Since I use a sideloaded font to read, the change in the default font didn't bother me. If you want to change the default publisher font, one of the patches in GeoffR & Co.'s patches allows you to set the default publisher font to any font on your ereader (factory or sideloaded). Given that Kobo still uses the font selected for the last book for a new book, selecting a different font is not something you need to do when starting to read every book.

As for embedded fonts, I haven't seen any change in behaviour with the 4.8.10956 firmware.

Interesting. I've never lost any sideloaded fonts on a simple firmware update. It takes a factory reset to remove them.

As for not being able to adjust some fonts anymore, that suggests that you had your firmware patched with the "Freedom to advanced fonts control" patch in the libnickel.so.1.0.0 patches. As for the default font, while the default fonts have been changed, there is a patch in the librmsdk.so.1.0.0 patches to allow setting the publisher default fonts for serif and sans-serif which also allows you to set sideloaded fonts as the defaults.

My Kobo Glo updated to this firmware a couple of days ago. Unfortunately for me it's significantly slower than before (when turning pages), and it seems the threshold between a page turn and text selection has been changed. As a result I end up selecting text a lot more by mistake, where I simply want to turn the page.

It's also exacerbated by the fact that it's slower, so I'm never sure if the touch has been registered or not, so I tend to press a bit longer, which in turn triggers the text selection. Alternatively since the page doesn't seem to be turning due to the slowness I touch again, and end up going forward 2 pages.

Has anyone else noticed something of the sort? Basically I haven't changed anything in the way I read, but since this upgrade it has really become a hassle to use my Kobo

What font are you using? The change that is most likely to slow things down when reading is the change for the font used for the "Publisher Default". This has changed to larger font that will probably take more memory. And as the Glo has very limited RAM, this could slow it down. The font was previously "Georgia". If you try that now, it might be better.

I just updated my kobo. If you delete books you finished they still disappear from the numbers. I had 8 books finished, deleted one to test this and now I only have 7...

but the good news is that the bug with the reading time was fixed! now I get numbers for the "avg. minutes per session" and "avg. pages per minute". yay.

For the past few versions, the Kobo only counts books on the device as finished—once they’ve been deleted, the count goes down. I’m still on firmware version 4.69995 and that’s the behavior I see.

It’s actually pretty funny, as my KA1 does record stats, but not very accurately, adding many hours to my time spent reading. A book that takes me 7-8 hours to read will show as having taken 45-50 hours. Since I delete books as soon as I finish them, my reader stats show that I’m a glacially slow reader. Yesterday, I got a message on my home screen that said something like “You’ve finished 2 books and have spent 1593 hours reading.”

No patch. I don't even understand the words used in the patch instructions. so I never patched it. Because I simply don't know how.

Sounds like my experience with my Kobo Touch. Before going back to an earlier software release I tried patching it. I don't know which patch did the trick, but now ePubs work with 4.8.x.
