Well, I don’t care for both and decided that such people can’t give me any useful recommendations. I think all the services are very much American centred, well nothing wrong with it, just not my cup of tea.
I don't waste my time with those lists. They are user voted lists and can easily be rigged, don't you think?

I really am not that interested in the social aspects of any of these kinds of sites. What I wanted was a way for me to keep an inventory of my books in a readily accessible location. I can view my GoodReads bookshelf from my mobile phone, so I'm happy (I'm sure you can also do the same with Library Thing).

One thing I have discovered about GoodReads is that I can compare my bookshelf to other readers' bookshelfs and find folks that have enjoyed the same books as me. I think this is useful because then I can scan through those users' bookshelves and perhaps find some books that I haven't read that I might want to read.

Do these sites like GoodReads compare books based on the title & author or do they use other information such as the ISBN? I ask this because I would be putting in the eBook editions for eBooks I've read and if I compare my bookshelf, would it find matches?

Probably not, now I'm curious.
Be sure to use your pshwynk (okay, pshrynk) username. That way we can all spy on you and see what you've been telling the girls that you've been reading lately. I'm up there (and shelfari and librarything) but I haven't yet bothered to list more than a few of my books. Oh, and I checked pilotbob's list once. He appears to own every book that was ever written with the word Star in the title. I'm impressed!

I started using Goodreads in September 2008 to keep track of books as I read them. When I signed up, I added all the books I'd read since January 2008. I rate the books as I finish them but haven't tried any of the other functionality of the site.

I don't know about goodreads... but library thing allows for social data to be added to each book. One of the fields is "canonical name" in the common knowledge section which is supposed to be the same from edition to edition. I think that is what is used to compare libraries, assuming a book has been given that data.

Then again I cold be wrong.

I don't think GoodReads will find the eBook ISBN numbers, but if you use the Title of the book, GoodReads will find the book (it may not be your actual edition)

You should look for groups of people who have the same reading interest as you. There are groups for every genre, and it's a great way to find about new interesting books to read.

That's a great idea, Lilac! I have joined the MobileRead group at GoodReads and I have created similar groups at both LibraryThing and Shelfari. Please you all to be joining fresh groups (or at least one of 'em).
