(The Ship Who Sang) is a classic; feels a little dated because of the whole "tape" and "film" thing, but what can you say, this was written before even compact discs (or personal computers for that matter).

Of course, the whole miniaturized computers/AI thing kind of obsolesces the main premise of mobile brains (or not, imagine how much better say, Stephen Hawking's life would have been as a mobile brain?).

Overall, I liked the stories, and they led to several wonderful collaborations of more mobile brain novels.

This sounds like something I would enjoy. Checking my library for it now... hah! got it. Also picked up Lucky Man.

Meanwhile, I plowed (funny how Firefox doesn't seem to think that's a word...) through the novella The Grownup; I liked it, and it enabled me to move on to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, though some say I should see the movie first, so as to avoid inevitable disappointment.

Finished Malicious Gossip by Khushwant Singh. An excellent collection of articles and memoirs of the author, published posthumously.

Well, actually I started Though Hell Should Bar The Way by David Drake. An excellent new novel in his RCN series, with a new viewpoint character, now that Leary is getting a bit too senior.

Last night I finished up Rebecca West's stellar The Fountain Overflows.

“Yes,” said Mamma, “this is the worst of life, that love does not give us common sense but is a sure way of losing it. We love people, and we say that we are going to do more for them than friendship, but it makes such fools of us that we do far less, indeed sometimes what we do could be mistaken for the work of hatred.”
I am listening to Mary Roach's Packing for Mars and I intend to start Myke Cole's The Armored Saint this evening.

Finished C J Box’s latest book, The Disappeared and it was a typically good Box book but:

I got the feeling it was only a half a book. Rather than ending, it sort of just stopped. Some issues were resolved but there were some left open which, presumably, will figure into the next book.

Now flying through Mark Greaney’s latest, Back Blast and ,so far, it is a major page-turner.

I recently read and enjoyed The Armored Saint. I'm interested in hearing your take on it.

I am 88% on the way through Ready Player One. I may start Rusty Nail after.

I quite enjoyed it. I did not really see the plot twist at the end coming, to be honest. I will certainly be picking up the next volume when it comes out in October.

Finished Making History over the weekend, and immediately started and finished Flat Broke with Two Goats to take the taste out of my mouth. I quite enjoyed it, though I could have done without the recipes. A solid 4 stars, trending to 5.

Now reading the first of Kristine Smith's Jani Kilian Chronicles, Code of Conduct. This is promising, and I hope it goes well - there are 4 more in the series.

I finished Making History which was OK. It had its faults but I seem to have enjoyed it more than the rest of the book club.

Then I read Turtles All the Way Down which is John Green's latest. I wasn't really aware it was about someone with mental health issues and I found it very affecting because I could identify.

Currently reading All The Good Things by Clare Fisher which was on display at the library and looked interesting.

He's good at affecting. He's also good at book titles. I haven't read this one yet, but looking forward to it.

TBH if I'd known the exact nature of the main character's mental health issues I might have avoided it. As it was I enjoyed it.

It was. Another book related to mental health but also it's about how someone's life can go in a downward spiral. Surprisingly hopeful despite the dark incident it centres around.

Next up is Holy Island: A DCI Ryan Mystery - trying to get more of my money's worth out of that KU subscription.

Finished Code of Conduct. A bit weird at the beginning, as it felt like it must be book two in a series and I was missing the back story. (It isn't, it's the first.) But eventually I got past that, and it improved. An interesting premise. I've already bought the second one, Rules of Conflict.

Starting to read Benn Steil's new book The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War.

I liked his 2013 book, The Battle of Bretton Woods: John Maynard Keynes, Harry Dexter White, and the Making of a New World Order. This book seems like a logical progression.

Currently in the initial part of the book, where he is discussing the near-simultaneous impact of Kennan's Long Telegram, Churchill's Fulton speech, and Stalin's Feb 9 1946 address at the Bolshoi theatre presenting capitalism and imperialism as the movers of world war.

I have high hopes for this book. If he could make a readable book about Bretton Woods, the subject for this book seems infinitely richer.

I started on this series, and thought it might be interesting. Then realized that it appears that every book has some sort of alternative religion/spiritual hook. It put me off this first book, and knowing that later ones would likely have the same problem made me return my KU versions. Just really not my thing. As a one-time plot device, I can power through it. But not knowing it's coming every time. And beyond that, I didn't think Holy Island was all that good. OK, but not great.

Finished reading Rusty Nail, which was engaging. Now I am reading Paper: Paging Through History by Mark Kurlansky. One wouldn't think that something as mundane as paper would be the subject of a history book, nor actually interesting to read, but there you go-- it is. This is the same author who wrote a history of salt; and it makes me wonder what his next book is going to be about.
