I think that there is no real counterpart in the U.S. to the MVL, unless it is in the laws of certain states of the Union. And probably those states only would have authority to set up bankruptcy arrangements for companies domiciled in their states; having only a "presence" in those states probably wouldn't give those states much, if any, say so in the bankruptcy process.

BTW--the kinds of bankruptcies in the U.S. in states that I've lived in, or have some knowledge about on some other basis, tend, at least to be referred to as "Chapters." I've heard of "Chapter 7" and "Chapter 9" bankruptcies, although I think that both of those are individual, and not corporate types.

There are bound to be some errors in what I wrote above, but I think that they would be minor ones. I'm sure that MobileReaders more "in the know" will set me straight. Anyway, between them and me you'll have some idea of what's going on when a U.S. bookstore or publisher goes through a bankruptcy, versus what's going on when one in England does.
<snip>
As it turns out, there were several inaccuracies and incomplete responses in my post above. I wrote a full reply, with corrections, etc. but somehow it disappeared into cyberspace. It was overly wordy anyway.

If I'm not mistaken, there are two basic types of business bankruptcies in the U.S. One is Chapter 9, and the other is Chapter 11. One of the two allows the business to continue operating, and one or more judges oversees the business' effort to be a going concern. With the other one, the business must cease operations immediately, or as close to it as possible, and liquidate (sell, convert to cash) all of their assets. The MVL which you spoke of seems to be very similar to the first kind that I mentioned.

I am not posting this book because I either agree or disagree with the author's point of view. I am posting it simply because the description brings up some points--whether right or wrong--that I find interesting, thought-provoking, and educational, and that other MobileReaders (especially in the U.S.) might find interesting, thought-provoking, and educational, too. I am not trying to persuade anyone of any view or another I have never read the book, and I had never heard, before, any of the points that the author brings up, as stated in the description, except for perhaps one or more of those concerning the Electoral College.
Thanks! It sounds extremely interesting no matter what the author's political beliefs are.

I didn't know about Endeavour's financial difficulties, but I'm disappointed to see that ebooks by at least one historical fiction author I was collecting (Maureen Peters) are no longer available for purchase at Amazon.

I hate to intrude on another person's turf, but . . .

The Whispersync deal on the ebook is only $1.99. That means that you can have the ebook to read, and the audiobook to listen to, for only $1.99!!

This deal deserves to be (and actually belongs on) the "Cheap Whispersync Deals" thread, but I don't have the time right now to read up on the rules about cross-posting, or whatever it's called. If someone does, and will, please be my guest.

Cross-posting of deals which fall into more than one category are allowed.

I've read the ebook a while back (I think it was a Kindle First selection). It is well worth the read. This is a compelling true story.

I found this article a while back, when I realized something had changed with Endeavour's publications:

https://www.thebookseller.com/news/e...s-wound-734191

Sounds like it was more a disagreement amongst partners and they're hoping to re-sign their authors to either of the two new entities. So maybe Ms. Peters' books will show up again, eventually.

I listened to this as an audio book a few years ago - it gives a decent background on the Homestead Steel strike of 1892.

The History of Assassination by Brian McConnell

First published in the United Kingdom in 1969 by Leslie Frewin.

‘Assassination...is the sudden, surprising, treacherous killing of a public figure, who has responsibilities to the public, by someone who kills in the belief that he is acting in his own private or the public interest.’

Assassination affects countries and peoples, even if some countries like England may rank it no higher than murder. Yet the difference between mere murder and assassination is the fame, or notoriety, of the victim. When a President is killed, the whole world grieves; when someone who has voted for that President is shot down trying to prevent a robbery, his name is a brief news story one day and chip paper the next.

In a brilliant study which finishes with the shootings of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, Brian O’Connell uses his expertise as a crime reporter to bring to life the infamous shootings to give support to his definition.

Brian McConnell (1928- 2004) joined the Daily Mirror, specialised in crime reporting, before he began writing books. His titles include The History of Assassination, and The Rise And Fall Of The Brothers Kray. In 1974 he stepped in front of and was shot by an armed kidnapper who was attempting to abduct Princess Anne.

On the chance that someone here is interested in the use of medieval swords and/or Historical European Martial Arts. Or simply harbors a seething rage against tatami mats. Here is a book that is normally $30.

Michael Edelson Cutting with the Medieval Sword: Theory and Application for $9.99 at Amazon.com.

Some discussion of the book on YouTube by scholagladiatoria and Medieval Review.

Get Life Wisdom from Zig Ziglar, for Only 99 Cents (90% Off of Retail)!

I posted a Zig Ziglar book about a couple of years ago. Someone remarked that he or she really liked Ziglar's works.

I don't remember if this is the book that I posted then or not, but in case it isn't, or someone else might be interested, I wanted to post this one.

Life Wisdom: Quotes from Zig Ziglar: Inspire To Be Great!. Retail $9.99; Price Now at Christianbook.com $0.99. That's 90% off of the retail price! This is an ePub (DRM Free).

I saw no page count at Christianbook; I assume that this one has the same, or about the same number of pages as Amazon's, however, which has 179 pages.

Amazon also has the book greatly marked down, also, but only to $2.99. I've got a feeling that this is a clearance item (but I could be wrong), so grab it while you can.

Ziglar was full of humor and wisdom. He was a rare talent. He is missed.

Ziglar was unabashedly religious. Based upon that, and upon hearing him on audio a couple of times, there may be occasional religious references, allusions, etc. in this book.

Story of Geronimo's Life--from Geronimo Himself. With Original Photos. FREE.

Geronimo's Story of His Life: With Original Photos, by Geronimo (author); Stephen Melvil Barrett (editor). Free.

4.2 stars, from 354 reviews, at Amazon; no ratings (shown) at GoodReads.

144 pages.

Description
Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache tribe. From 1850 to 1886 Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands—the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi—to carry out numerous raids as well as resistance to US and Mexican military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora, and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848 . . . .
