With ATDrake "out of pocket," I tried to ferret out the free English PDF book, from Aarhus University Press, for this month, as ATDrake had been doing. I tried all of the tricks of the trade that I know, but I couldn't find it.

The University Press has a newsletter, and I signed up for it. Perhaps ATDrake was on the newsletter's mailing list and got the URL for the freebie each month from it. Anyway, I'll see what happens. Apparently Aarhus announces a new freebie for the month around the very end of each month, or perhaps very early in a month.

I suspect that Aarhus University Press have stopped doing the free book each month. If you subscribe to a series then you get the first issue free, but have to pay for the remainder. It was good while it lasted, but all good things must come to and end sooner or later.

I hadn't thought of the possibility that the program has ended. You certainly might be right.

One of the the things that causes me to question that is the timing--I'd have to search to be sure--but it seems to me that the end of ATDrake's Aarhus posts (considering the fact that they occurred only once a month (I think)) coincided with the end of all of his posts. As I have gotten older, I have gotten to the point that I don't "believe in" coincidences.

As I mentioned earlier, I do hope that he is well. Subordinate to that, I miss his posts and hope that he will be in circumstances that he can return to posting.

Coincidence or not, I think Aarhus no longer offers the free books. They had static pages for the free monthly books, one in English and one in Danish. A few months ago, both links started returning errors and searching the site didn't turn up anything promising.

Yeah. I got the dreaded "404 Error" trying to access a couple of different webpages that seemed promising. I suppose that that is what is what you have in mind. Having an almost non-existent knowledge of IT kinds of things, I thought that the webpages may be those that had been used for previous months' giveaways, but quit being used after the months were over.

Speaking of not seeing someone in a while, I was about to put an APB (All Points Bulletin--I don't that that terminology is used by law enforcement agencies anymore) out on you. ha I'm glad to see a post from you again.

It was a trap. They used the free books to keep ATDrake contacting the site so they could trace his location. ATDrake is being tortured in a Danish dungeon. Now that they have him, they don't need to provide the free books anymore.

Napoleon and His Parents by Dorothy Carrington

There is more to Napoleon’s parents than when and where they married.

Documents that could have told another tale remained hidden away in Corsican homes and archives, too little known and too fragmentary to discredit the accepted story. And all this time, and till today, an essential source remained unexploited: the Bonaparte family papers, saved from the destruction of their home when they fled Corsica in 1793, and inherited by Prince Louis Napoleon. Access to this invaluable collection has led to a story very different from any hitherto presented; one which, if incomplete, and at moments obscure, is unquestionably closer to what really happened.

The author reveals Carlo as a militant partisan of Pasquale Paoli, revolutionary leader of independent Corsica, and Letizia as the fashionably-dressed reigning beauty of Paoli’s mountain capital. She shows them fleeing for their lives before the invading army of Louis XV. Then, in record time, they emerge as favourites of the French commander Marbeuf, the most powerful man on the island.

First published 1988 by Penguin Books.

Dorothy Carrington (1910-2002) studied at Oxford University before settling in Corsica where she began a career as a writer. She was known for her award-winning book on her home island, Granite Island, and for her scholarship on one of its revolutionaries, the Corsican liberator Pasquale Paoli). She married the painter Francis Rose, becoming Lady Rose, and was a lecturer and journalist.

Thanks for keeping us informed about the new Charles River Editors markdowns, and your endeavor ( ) to keep us informed about Endeavor books. I thought that I was on every ebook sale mailing list known to man (or woman), but I think that I'm not on the mailing list of either one of these companies.

R.e. the Napoleon book, there are no ratings at Amazon, but the other English language books of author Carrington at Amazon are well-received. The Napoleon book and other English language books of hers listed at GoodReads get high marks, also.

There is an Endeavour mailing list which may be useful since they use multiple imprints now including Endeavour Media as well as Endeavour Books.

Hmm

Please be advised that Nick Myers and Henry Shinners, both of Smith & Williamson LLP, were appointed joint liquidators of Endeavour Press Limited (“the Company”) when it entered members’ voluntary liquidation (“MVL”) on 31 January 2018.

==
An MVL is a solvent winding-up of a company, whereby the directors have made a declaration of solvency to the effect that all of the company’s debts will be paid in full, together with statutory interest, within 12 months of the commencement of the liquidation.

Thanks for all of that information, including that about the MVL.

I think that there is no real counterpart in the U.S. to the MVL, unless it is in the laws of certain states of the Union. And probably those states only would have authority to set up bankruptcy arrangements for companies domiciled in their states; having only a "presence" in those states probably wouldn't give those states much, if any, say so in the bankruptcy process.

BTW--the kinds of bankruptcies in the U.S. in states that I've lived in, or have some knowledge about on some other basis, tend, at least to be referred to as "Chapters." I've heard of "Chapter 7" and "Chapter 9" bankruptcies, although I think that both of those are individual, and not corporate types.

There are bound to be some errors in what I wrote above, but I think that they would be minor ones. I'm sure that MobileReaders more "in the know" will set me straight. Anyway, between them and me you'll have some idea of what's going on when a U.S. bookstore or publisher goes through a bankruptcy, versus what's going on when one in England does.

On a practical level, I hope that Endeavor's financial issues will not affect the quality--which seems to be good now--of their books. Sometimes it seems that the quality of the products that company produces suffers, in response, when they are going tough times financially.

Willie: The Life of W. Somerset Maugham by Robert Calder

William Somerset Maugham went to a lot of trouble to ensure that no biography of himself could be written.
Ever in terror of disrespectful leaks, he left strict directives with his Literary Executor and organised ‘bonfire nights’ of letters and unpublished writings. It brought him a good deal of attention – most of it unfriendly.
As doctor, spy, homosexual, husband, father, nonagenarian and one of this century’s most admired and successful writers, he was, in any case, an extraordinary man.
By nature aloof, imperious and emotional, he was a curious mixture of kindness and cruelty, a writer frightened only of his own psyche.

Robert Calder provides a sympathetic portrait of the stammering and elusive individual behind the austere persona.

First published in 1989 by William Heinemann Ltd

Robert Lorin Calder is Professor of English at the University of Saskatchewan
He is also the author of W. Somerset Maugham and the Quest for Freedom (1972).

This is a post for a free ebook entitled, Who Will Be the Next President? A Guide to the U.S. Presidential System.

I encourage you basically to ignore the title of the book, because from what I can tell, the book does not (directly, at least) have anything to do with who the next president of the United States will be. Focus, instead, on the subtitle: [B]A Guide to the U.S. Presidential System[B], because that more accurately says what the book is about.

It appears to me that the book is, even still more accurately, a litany of the oddities, and unfair and stupid aspects, of the U.S. presidental election process, as the author sees it. See if you don't get the same idea, from reading the description:

If the title of this book has caught your eye, spend a couple of minutes to look at the following list of statements relevant to American presidential elections:
1. The system for electing a President was not designed to reflect the popular will.
2. The current election system does not follow some major ideas of the Founding Fathers.
3. The application of some election rules can make the intervention of the Supreme Court in the election process almost inevitable.
4. Amendment 12 of the Constitution contains at least seven puzzles relating to presidential elections, and the answers to these puzzles have remained unknown for more than 200 years.
5. The text of Article 2 of the Constitution contains a statement that is mathematically incorrect.
6. Skillful use of the election system may elect a President with less than 20 % of the popular support.
7. Applying some election rules may cause a constitutional crisis in the country.
8. Votes cast by voters in a presidential election in November of the election year are not votes for President or for Vice President.
9. The “winner-take-all” method for awarding state electoral votes can be used to encourage presidential candidates to fight for each and every vote in a state and in D.C.
10. Many statements about the Electoral College mechanism are no more than myths of their authors, no matter how plausible these myths may seem.
11. A tie in the Electoral College may not necessarily be resolved in the House of Representatives in favor of a person who has support from majorities of at least 26 delegations there.
12. There is no need to get rid of the Electoral College to make every vote cast valuable in deciding the election outcome.
If these statements bother or intrigue you, and you want the explanations, this book is written for you.

I am not posting this book because I either agree or disagree with the author's point of view. I am posting it simply because the description brings up some points--whether right or wrong--that I find interesting, thought-provoking, and educational, and that other MobileReaders (especially in the U.S.) might find interesting, thought-provoking, and educational, too. I am not trying to persuade anyone of any view or another I have never read the book, and I had never heard, before, any of the points that the author brings up, as stated in the description, except for perhaps one or more of those concerning the Electoral College.

I am "throwing out of the window" all of my usual requirements for posting, because this is an Open Access title (see below). By nature, Open Access ebooks seem to gravitate toward that which is esoteric, scholarly, and academic (that is to say, very few people seem to read them).

Get the Kindle mobi free from Amazon.com. I said that it was Open Access, and it is. If you decide that you want to get the free mobi somewhere else, you can access it at the Open Access website unglue.it. You can also get the PDF and/or ePub free there, if you prefer one or both of those formats. Look for the thumbnail of a book with a bright green cover, and click on it.
