No its NOT a concrete reason for screaming that "Sony Sucks!"

A little research before hand would have found this out.

As posted by Jon, Sony's prices are not that out of line.

Have you tried downloading library books to your Sony? This is a great way to read 'for free' until the loan period is over.
BTW I would be interested in links to libraries that allow downloads. My library in Mobile AL barely has internet access, let alone downloads! I travel a lot and this would be a great service. Thx!

From our Wiki......I hear the NYPL has the best selection, but you can go and research for yourself on the titles available. Everyone's tastes differ.

If you were expecting to mostly buy books from Sony's store... yeah, it sucks. Some people are going to feel cheated about that; it's nowhere near as extensive, nor as cheap, nor as well-programmed, as Amazon's ebook-buying options.

But the Reader does what I want it to do--allows me to read ebooks away from my computer. Since a substantial portion of what I read is web-based content that has never and will never see print (fanfic, blogs), I needed something that was easy to convert to, not easy to download to. Between Calibre, Lib2Go, and the Reader's PDF capabilities, I'm very happy with it.
Thanks for your input. I will check out the sites mentioned. I suspect I need to get away from Sony book store, and I agree that the Reader is a useful and very adequate device. I just hate being gouged!

So, Sony sucks because their books are more expensive than another publisher that has also an ereader.

How about BeBook/Hanlin/whatever else has the same device, CyBook, IRex, etc, then? They don't even have bookstores! You'll have to get your books at other sources from the start. I think those devices must be horrible then...

My point is, don't judge a book by its cover. Just because the store isn't up to your standards, doesn't mean the entire company sucks...

But you really aren't being gouged, in my opinion. You're just paying slightly more than the most cheapest ebook site. If you go elsewhere, books are a lot more expensive than the Sony store.

Don't you think it's a little childish to say "Sony Sucks"? We all know that Amazon subsidise best-sellers; nobody makes a secret of that fact.

However, if you compare Sony's prices to those of all the other eBook stores, you'll find that they are comparable. Presumably what you actually mean is "everybody except Amazon sucks", is it, given that Sony's prices are very competitive compared with bookstores such as FictionWise, BooksOnBoard, etc etc?

I think Amazon secretly deals with the publishers and pressures them to make Sony ebooks more expensive. I need to start an Amazon Sucks thread

You might try Baen. SF/F but they also have a free library and they have books in the LRF format for the Sonys. Also their books are very reasonably priced and are DRM free. Check out their Webscriptions.

Sometimes I think the same thing. They get books earlier than other sites, which drives me crazy.

Amazon does do secret meetings with publishers/authors. Just look at the eBook UR. That's a backroom deal if there ever was one.

We are NOT talking about a matter of $2. For example, the book Dune Messiah (by Frank Herbert), at the sony bookstore, is $17.46. On amazon, it is $7.19. This is a matter of $10 difference, more than 50%!

This is HUGE, and a huge part of the reason I want a kindle. I do buy books from the store a lot.

I used to purchase Sony products. Lots of them. However, their customer service (or rather lack thereof) drove me away and has kept me away for a long time. I now only purchase Sony if there is no other option and it is a deep discount sale.

I don't think I would sum up my experience by saying "Sony sucks" .... I just tell people that the quality of their products seems to have slipped, they aren't as reliable as they once were, and customer service is mostly nonexistent.

And, that's why I bought a Kindle.
