Screensavers hack worked just fine (really the only one I needed for now) but I get your point.
I updated to 5.8.11 via update_kindle_all_new_paperwhite_5.8.11.bin from Amazon servers and UYK. Reinstalled the screensaver packages after updating and all works just fine. Thanks a lot ^^ |

Although my central mottos are: "Never change a running system." and "Newer isn't always better!" I too upgraded to 5.8.11 a few months ago. Until this time I was still using 5.8.7.0.1 (the last fw that could be directly downgraded to the factory build, just in case ...).
The user fw v5.8.11 in my eyes is very stable. And though I'm using my Kindle only as a good hardware platform (never ever connected it to Amazon, thus my only books in Amazon formats were the Users Manual and the dictionaries which came out of the box), I've decided to convert some technical and otherwise specialized books in mobi and ePub with lots of formatting etc. via Calibre to the new AZW3 format, and read them using the native Amazon firmware instead of the otherwise preferred CoolReader. And - BINGO! - the new boldness options are becoming more and more a real benefit for me in these cases! (Especially in connection with an appropriate FONT_RAMP file.) So 5.8.11 is really worth a try. ![]() |

I just purchased a Paperwhite 3 with special offers (taking advantage of the $40 glitch). Unfortunately, although I made sure to block OTA updates (using the update.bin.tmp.partial method), I did register my device, so that I would be able to deactivate the special offers (as recommended in the wiki page), not realizing that this potentially ruined my chance at downgrading my device (which is running the 5.8.11 (3243010037) FW that others have had success with downgrading). What should I do from here? Should I just get rid of special offers and wait for a breakthrough for 5.8.11, or is there any hope for a downgrade?

If your 5.8.11 still is the out-of-the-box version (i.e. your Kindle never did an OTA update), just give the downgrade to 5.8.9.0.1 factory build a try. Ask knc1 for the details where to get the file...

Is there still a risk of irreversible (besides serial port) bricking that way?

I am new to the Kindle and I know there is no jailbreak yet for the Oasis 2017 or if there ever will be.
I got mine no long ago and I had to get a replacement due to screen issues so it is due to arrive soon. To prevent it from automatically updating I just need to create a folder called 'update.bin.tmp.partial' in the root of the Kindle when it is connected to my PC and that should prevent any updates correct? Should I do this in a console in Windows or on a Linux computer? Anything special I should do with it once I get it out of the box? I saw somewhere where people were interested in the files contained on it when it is received. Right now it shows up in my Amazon account but would assume the device is unassigned until it gets internet the first time to check Amazon's servers. |

Do not use DO_FACTORY_RESTORE method, it will brick the device. Try to write to the usb-visible root of the device any new firmware update file and reboot with the button. If the device is visible by a computer for a short time only, look at this: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...57#post3663457 |

Jail breaking a Kindle is not the place for inventing your own procedures. Now you get to use the serial port to recover the device. And when you do, try following the directions. |
