Get a FREE Library of Homeschool Materials.
I was not homeschooled, and don't and didn't homeschool any children, so I am not familiar with what's going on in the movement, what resources are available, etc.. But this looked like a good thing. I hope that people "in the know," on this thread, about such things will let others on this thread know their opinion of the offer below.
"The Erskine Family" has a website called HomeschoolFreebie.com, which has homeschool resources, offers advice and information to homeschoolers, and things like that. I am familiar with The Erskine Family and some of the things that they do, and my impression is that they are just good folks who want to help people. Through April 17, they are offering a 9-volume library of Charlotte Mason style and Classical Education "educational treasures," including the following: - Outdoor games & activities - Nature projects and stories - Great Literature & Poetry - Music & Art History and Appreciation - Character Building Stories & Activities - Famous Speeches and Letters - Communication, Rhetoric & Logic Skills - Biographical sketches of famous men of long ago - Bible verses in Latin (with the English alongside) for copywork - Lesson Plans, Schedules and helpful Teaching Tips - Much, much more. The signup webpage says that there are over 1,300 pages of material. All of the resources are apparently in the PDF format. The entire library, normally priced at $67, is free, again through April 17. The way that this works is that people who sign up for the offer will receive one volume each week as they released this Spring. You'll get a link to the first volume when you sign up. Signing up is not onerous at all--just give your name and email address. A website which gives much more information, and from which you can sign up for the offer. Many years ago, the Mediterranean took on an amber hue. Roiled by the Schlitz war for malt liquor supremacy. At long last, the thrilling story can be told.

Elizabeth Fry: A Biography by June Rose First published in 1980 by Macmillan London Ltd. Even during her own lifetime that remarkable woman Elizabeth Fry aroused hostility as well as admiration. Quakers found her ‘worldliness’ disquieting; her fellow penal reformers disapproved of her unorthodox ways; her family felt neglected. Elizabeth Fry herself was tortured by self-doubt and torn by conflicting demands. In this biography, based on Elizabeth Fry’s unexpurgated journals, June Rose removes the ‘saint’ from her pedestal to show her as she really was – complex, contradictory, but courageously defying the conventions of her age June Rose is also the author of Modigliani: The Pure Bohemian and Marie Stopes and the Sexual Revolution https://www.amazon.com/Elizabeth-Fry...dp/B07BK4ZJDH/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Elizabeth-F...dp/B07BK4ZJDH/ https://www.amazon.ca/Elizabeth-Fry-...dp/B07BK4ZJDH/ Last edited by Little.Egret; 03-31-2018 at 08:04 AM. |

Good, FREE Book about the Falklands War.
Here's a freebie.
It's A D*mn Close-Run Thing: A Brief History of the Falklands War, by Russell Phillips. Amazon sells the Kindle mobi for $2.99. The book's got decent ratings between them and GoodReads. It's probably a PDF. My guess is that the book rarely gets marked down. Get it by going to this Shika Publishing webpage. Look in the top lefthand corner for more information. Alternatively, you can click on the "free ebook" link at the top of the page. Although the ebook is free, you do have to sign up on a mailing list to get it. Unfortunately, I can't get the ebook free, because I'm already on the mailing list. ![]() Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-01-2018 at 06:01 PM. |

The Spanish Civil War: Revised Edition by Hugh Thomas has dropped from $15.99 to $5.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I haven't read this book, but have read one of Thomas' other books and enjoyed it, and this is a period about which I don't know all that much, so this is going to join my far-too-long TBR list.

Before that, let me mention that while it's a 4.1-star book at Amazon, there are a significant number of "1's." I encourage you to read the reviews that go along with them, and also the single (I think that there's just one) "2" among the ratings. I doubt that most people in the U.S. have ever learned about the Spanish Civil War, but it was a seminal event. The War occurred in 1936-1939 or so. The Nazis actively participated, taking the side of the Nationalists (fascists). It gave the Nazis an opportunity to test out new tactics and test their shiny, new weapons, prior to World War II. It was for them like a dress rehearsal for the real thing. The ruthlessness and disregard for human life on the part of the Nazis in Spain were a portent to the world of things to come. Pablo Picasso, in his inimitable way, immortalized that aspect of the Nazis' participation in the War in his famous painting, Guernica, (Guernica being a town in Spain which experienced bombing by the Nazis). This War served as a wake up call, however, to the U.S. and other countries which had let their military preparedness go down. It allowed those countries some precious time to build up their militaries, and not be completely flatfooted when World War II began. Interestingly, while the Nazis gave invaluable help to Franco (fascist) so that he could take over Spain, Franco didn't return the favor--somehow he managed to stay neutral throughout World War II. I had a couple of courses in high school under a wonderful history teacher. One of the courses was a history of World War II. I am impressed by the fact that the teacher did not begin the course by covering the fact that the Allies stayed out of the way when Hitler annexed Austria, parts of Czechoslovakia, and possibly part of and maybe all of other sovereign countries (I've forgotten if there were any more), or the official start of World War II in September 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded the western part of Poland, and the British and the French declared war in response. The teacher began with the Spanish Civil War. |
