One issue to be aware of is that electronic rights and print rights are often sold separately and, like print rights, electronic rights don't necessarily apply internationally. Sometimes the same company will produce both, but not always. Also, the electronic copy isn't free to produce and distribute. Whoever produced it incurred some costs doing so. Even if the same company owns both print and electronic rights they legally get to determine how much to charge people for each. It would be nice if they did offer a package deal in the future since ebooks are getting more popular but we're talking about the 100s of paper books you have purchased in the past.

Of course, you do have the right in most countries to scan and digitize your own copy. Downloading someone else's scanned work, however, is usually forbidden. I think this is the point it gets tough for a lot of people to swallow, especially when there's no legally distributed electronic copy available for purchase.

In Once again..the million dollar question!, I tried a (legal) CHM on the Hanlin V3 and the iLiad. I was able to convert this 8 MB CHM to MOBI using Windows MobiPocket Reader. It took 10-15 minutes and resulted in a 16 MB MOBI. The first two screenshots are from Windows MobiPocket Reader on the MOBI version of the CHM.

I did not find that the MOBI was usable on the Hanlin, because of difficulties navigating the links, but it worked well on the iLiad and it also works well on my Kindle 1. The last three screenshots are from this MOBI version on the Kindle. There are still perhaps issues with the display of code fragments on the small screen, but if Windows MobiPocket Reader will convert from MOBI to CHM (it does not always work) then the CHMs are readable on the Kindle.

.jpg and .png are listed as being supported after conversion. So, you would have to email the files to Amazon, or use Mobipocket Creator or Calibre or something.

The free Calibre E-Book Conversion Software converts CHMs to Mobi/Epub/... and can export it directly (via USB or WiFi) to your Kindle (DX).
