Now all nine of Smith's Skip Langdon titles are free in an omnibus at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Skip-Langdon-...dp/B00NT2RXZ6/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The EDGAR AWARD-WINNING murder mystery series is now available for a KILLER price!

Grab 9 thrilling page-turners for less than an Alexander Hamilton!
Follow the remarkably bold, smart, and refreshingly human New Orleans detective Skip Langdon through the twists and turns of New Orleans--from raucous Mardi Gras to the swampy summertime--at she navigates deadly family secrets, tracks down a serial killer, and delves deep into the mastermind of a psychopath unlike any you've ever encountered...

“Gritty, witty, & mesmerizing! Langdon is a splendid female heroine.” –People Magazine

"Like a good Grisham: taut, fast, and thrilling. But with a lot more heart and soul.” -The Clarion-Ledger

NEW ORLEANS MOURNING

It's Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and civic leader and socialite Chauncy St. Amant has been crowned Rex, King of Carnival. But his day of glory comes to an abrupt and bloody end when a parade-goer dressed as Dolly Parton guns him down.

AXEMAN'S JAZZ

What's the perfect killing field for a murderer? A place where he (or maybe she) can learn your secrets from your own mouth and then make friends over coffee. A supposedly "safe" place where anonymity is the norm. The horror who calls himself The Axeman has figured it out and claimed his territory—he's cherry-picking his victims in the 12-Step programs of New Orleans.

JAZZ FUNERAL

Skip Langdon just happens to be on hand when Ham Brocato, director if New Orleans Jazzfest, is discovered dead on the kitchen floor in the middle of his own party the evening before the Fest. To complicate the already murky case, the victim's sixteen-year-old blues musician sister has disappeared, and Skip suspects that if the young woman isn't the murderer, she's in mortal danger from the person who is.

DEATH BEFORE FACEBOOK

It’s a chilly November in 1994, and thirty-one-year-old Geoff Kavanagh surreptitiously splits his time between science fiction novels and cyberspace in his parents’ dilapidated, overgrown, uptown New Orleans mansion. Until his mother finds him dead from a suspicious fall off a ladder. Maybe he should never have posted about seeing his father murdered …

HOUSE OF BLUES

Sugar Hebert arrives home from a ten-minute errand to find her husband shot to death and the rest of her family missing—including her daughter Reed, heir apparent to the Hebert restaurant dynasty, and Reed's eleven-month-old daughter.

THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

Politics makes the strangest bedfellows of all and in New Orleans, a psychopath’s running for mayor. Not just the usual harmless megalomaniac—a murderer and a monster.

CRESCENT CITY CONNECTION

Sure, New Orleans is known for corruption, but suddenly the good guys get a break—an honest police chief. And then someone guns him down. When a terrifying organization called The Jury takes out the cop-killer, Detective Skip Langdon’s on the case. And she suspects The Jury’s the brainchild of her old nemesis, self-described preacher Errol Jacomine

82 DESIRE

It seems Councilwoman Bebe Fortier has misplaced her equally prominent husband, United Oil VP Russell Fortier. Across town, part-time detective/poet Talba Wallis has a simple wish--to find out what Russell Fortier's disappearance has to do with her. NOPD Detective Skip Langdon soon senses something big starting to unfold, something a lot bigger than a missing husband. Something rooted in corruption, resulting in violence—and motivated by that old demon . . . desire.

MEAN WOMAN BLUES

The Rev. Errol Jacomine is crazy as a fox that just ate a loon and more dangerous than a cell full of serial killers. He's trying to off Detective Skip Langdon, the New Orleans cop who’s twice smashed his criminal endeavors, yet each time he’s managed to slip away. Now he’s mad. In both senses of the word. And he has the connections to have her killed—or worse, those she loves.

Rebecca Schwartz Complete Set: Five Funny Cozy Mysteries is what it says it is - an omnibus of the five titles in Smith's Schwartz series. I've read and enjoyed all of them back in DTB days.

Titles are:
  • Death Turns a Trick

If you consider Booksbnimble press to be self-pub (I don't, since they have editing staff featured on their website, and I consider lack of decent editing to be the major issue with self-pub titles), skip the rest of this post...

Flag Boy is the 10th in the Tubby Dubonnet series by Tony Dunbar. It is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Flag-Boy-Tubb...dp/B075V63Z74/

Spoiler:
Quote:
A FRENCH QUARTER MASSACRE, ANOTHER IN MISSISSIPPI, AND A JIGSAW OF A PLOT!

Never have Tony Dunbar's diabolically complex plotting, on-the-nose characters, and hawk-like ability to seize upon and capture everything New Orleans been on better display than in his jaw-dropping new thriller. FLAG BOY, the TENTH entry in his popular Tubby Dubonnet series, is Dunbar's most wickedly clever mystery since his Edgar-nominated CROOKED MAN, as dark and stormy a tale as ever slithered its noirish way out of New Orleans.

The set-up alone's enough to make you believe in the butterfly effect. Two acrobats burglarize a house; a sultan moves into a French Quarter mansion; a Mardi Gras Indian, in the wrong place at the wrong time, is wrongfully arrested; and our hero, lawyer and sometime-detective Tubby Dubonnet, comes upon a double murder while paying a social call in the wilds of Mississippi. Thus is the stage set. You know instantly-- because this is a Tubby Dubonnet mystery-- that these disparate events are intricately intertwined.

Next, as Elmore Leonard famously never said, all hell breaks loose-- and with more than a touch of Leonard's own brand of wry and knowing humor. You can barely turn the page before a bloody massacre leaves the sultan's entire family dead; the Indian-- now Tubby's client-- gets fingered for this one, too; one of the acrobatic burglars hooks up with Tubby's best friend; and some way, somehow, Dunbar weaves each of these wildly divergent strands-- and a few others-- into the kind of old-fashioned puzzle mystery they just don't write anymore. It's as if James M. Cain married Agatha Christie.

Nobody but Cain could pack a plot the size of all Louisiana into a space the size of a French Quarter balcony, and nobody but Christie could pull off the kind of riddle wrapped inside a mystery inside an enigma she pioneered. Dunbar does both-- and all in one slim, thrill-packed book. Although perhaps at this point his long-time fans are thinking Wait! How does he work the food in? There's always food! Well, that's there, too.

Leonard, Christie, and Cain fans should hurry on down, as well as devotees of John Grisham, Michael Connelly, Alafair Burke, Robert Tannenbaum, Lisa Scottoline, and John Ellsworth-- in fact, anyone who loves hard-boiled, humorous, noir, or puzzle mysteries, especially all rolled up into an extremely stylish legal thriller.

Thanks for the new noon, rbruce and past contributors! I now own 28 of the 30 book series. Of course, I can’t even consider reading a single word of them until they put book #1 at free again.

. . . . . which leaves me confused!!
Amazon.com normally gives you the US$ equivalent of what the book costs in your area not what it costs in the USA. So, for example, an Open Media book on sale in the USA will generally still show regular price when I check it from Canada at amazon.com Or I can go to amazon.com and see a number of free Patricia Wentworth books which I'm reliably informed are not free in the US (not completely surprising, given that she's PD in Canada and not in the US).

Ah - hence the reason folks go to all that trouble to mask their IP addresses with virtual identities associated with other countries. Makes sense now!!

Not the reason but rather different publishers in UK+ Canada (both Dean Street Press and Hodder & Stoughton) and US (Open Road Media Mystery). The split may date back to the days when the author might sell UK+Canada or UK only rights and US+Canada rights.

And still copyright in UK (life+70).

Guilt Without Proof is the fourth in the C.I.D. Room series by Roderic Jeffries. Per SYKM, Jeffries wrote this series using the pen name, Peter Alding. Guilt is free right now at Kindle US.

Spoiler:
Quote:
The hijacking of a lorry filled with whiskey. A body discovered within a burnt-out cellar. Are they connected?

Detective Inspector Fusil believes they are.

All he requires now is some evidence. But that's easier said than done.

Sending his already over-worked team out into the field, Fusil is under strong scrutiny from his superiors.

Politics prevent him from chasing his biggest lead too closely.

His budget prevents him from spending too much time searching for new leads.

Gut instinct points him in the direction of Findren and Sharman, two local wine sellers that have establishments large enough to handle the whiskey heist.

But can he prove that either of them were involved?

Ordered by his chief inspector to move on from those two and search elsewhere for suspects, Fusil is fast running out of evidence to catch the criminals.

Unless he breaks the rules…

Putting his career on the line, he disregards orders in search of the truth.

Can he catch the perpetrators before his insubordination is discovered?

Frustrations mount as he finally identifies the criminal.

But without proof, how can he get a conviction?

Guilt Without Proof is a brilliantly written crime novel, full of twists that will keep you hooked right until the very end.

A bunch of price drops on Lawrence Sanders titles, mostly to $2.99, across multiple series and including a couple of omnibuses. As discussed somewhere upthread, Open Road is notorious for re-issues that don't show up as previously bought on the individual book webpages, so check carefully before you buy. Link includes a couple of strays....

Several titles in the much nominated/awarded Bill Smith/Lydia Chin series by S. J. Rozan are £0.99 at Kindle UK right now. These look as if they have been re-titled/new-covered for the UK - my list below gives both titles where I know them:
  • Bad Blood, apa Stone Quarry, #6
  • Blood Rites, apa Reflecting the Sky, #7
  • Blood Ties, apa Winter and Night, #8
  • Trail of Blood, apa The Shanghai Moon, #9
  • Out for Blood, apa On the Line, #10
  • Ghost Hero, #11
    ...
I read pretty much all of this series in DTB days and remember it quite fondly, so am happy to see several of these at a good price.

The link also includes a stray short story, and some other strays, but for me, at least, these are the first six titles that show up.

Today’s Amazon.co.uk Big Deal is a lot of mysteries. It includes 11 Inspector Morse titles by Colin Dexter at £1.19 (the first 2 in the series are reduced to £5.23), and books 9-16 in the Inspector Montalban series by Andrea Camillieri at 99p (or £1.19 for 16).

https://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=s9_ac...d_i=5400977031

It’s possible that some of the Inspector Morse’s are a repeat deal.

I don't know, but I didn't think it much good. I read about half of the first book, and decided to stop there. Very formulaic.
